Aircard 810 had no/unstable 4G LTE connection in Japan

I'm using the Aircard 810 (similar as 810S I suppose) in Japan with Docomo 4G LTE network. The network requires PAP or CHAP authentication. I had no issues connecting to their mobile network with my HTC U11 phone or the TP-Link mobile hotspot M7350 I bought years ago.

The 810 could receive HSPA (3.5G) network well but it could not stay on the 4G network even with good 4G signal coverage. Sometimes it said it was connected to the internet with 4G connection but my devices connected to the 810 hotspot could not browse the internet at all. Sometimes it simply failed to search for any network if it was configured to use LTE bands only.

The 810 has all the LTE bands of the TP-Link M7350: FDD-LTE B1/B3/B7/B8/B20 (2100/1800/2600/900/800MHz). If the M7350 could connect to the 4G network stably, I believe the problem has to do with the firmware of the 810 but not the hardware compatibility.

My 810 has the firmware released in June 2017, which is the latest one so far I think. I bought it in Hong Kong and it had been working well for me but not in Japan.
Firmware version: NTG9X40C_11.14.08.26
Hardware version: 1.0

Any suggestions on how to fix the issue? Many thanks.

Edit: updated with firmware and hardware version.

  • So I got it working for an hour by entering the APN again. Then after a while at another location, my connected devices failed to access the Internet again. On the Web admin UI, it said it was connected with LTE but in fact none of my devices that were connected to the hotspot could connect to the internet.

If I clicked on "disconnect" and then "connect" again, it took forever to connect again. I had to restart my 810 to get it connected to the network again but with HSPA only while I was certain that there was LTE coverage.

It is getting very frustrating and the fast LTE speed is meaningless without stability. Hope it can be fixed soon for it's one of the best mobile hotspot devices Netgear offers.
