CM500 connects only 100mb to PC or Netgear router.

I have a CM500 modem for home with Comcast and speed 100down/5up and had been happy with it for 3 months now.  Comcast upped it to 150down now and it's all fine. Use R8000 behind it.

Bought a second CM500 for my daughter's place where she has 200down/10up.

For some reason, the second unit from first installation, only one time immediately after activation and connected to my laptop would connect via 1GB.  I tested connection speed and got 250down/10up.

Then subsequently, configured a brand new R6120 router to connect it behind the CM500.  That's when I only got the ember light and R6120 showed that it only connected 100Mb to CM500.  Reset and recongifure R6120 did not good.  Reboot both units multiple with same result.  Reset CM500, reregistered with Comcast with no success.  Connected laptop directly to CM500, reboot CM500, Reboot laptop yeilded same result.

What could cause this?

Unfortunately, I had to return both units since that would not work for my daughter.

I need another modem and AC router for her but do not want different make or face same issue again.

      Sure.

Three separate cables used, two brand new from the boxes of the units and one connected Gigabit earlier.

It's rare but occasionally two devices can fail to negotiate to run at 1 Gbps. Netgear doesn't provide any user settings to control this. I've seen people successfully use an Ethernet switch in between. Normally, you should never put a switch between a modem and router, but this is one exception.

Seeing as you returned everything, I would not worry about this happening again. As I said, it's rare for this to happen.
