connecting the M1100 to R7800

after connecting the M1100 with an ethernet cable to the R7800 nighthawk router, the R7800 did not have any internet service. the only way it would work is to turn on IP passthrough in the m1100, connect ethernet cable, and the R7800 would have internet service. my question is why do i have to do this, and is there a better or different way to connect the M1100 mobile router to the R7800 router? i really dont want to have to undo these changes every time i dissconnet the M1100 for traveling and make them back when we are home. i want to be able to connect the two units (without making changes to the M1100) and have both routers sending out the WIFI signals.

thanks for the help.

i did not know i could change the R7800 to be an access point, thanks for the document. the m1100 does not send out a strong signal outside my home, that is where the R7800 works better. first of all i had the R7800 connected to the LB1120 modem, then i heard about the M1100 has better service, and it does, also i can disconnect it from the R7800 for traveling.  thanks for your help.
