Connecting VOIP - Nighthawk M1 (MR1100)

Hi all Sue here from Hobart, Australia.

I recently moved into a rental where I am unable to have wired internet connected (ADSL or NBN) so went out yesterday and purchased a Nighthawk M1 mobile wifi router, which I'm thrilled with.

However, I have a plan with my previous internet supplier for VOIP and have the telephone number already assigned as I used it at my previous residence. That ISP have advised that I can still use the number in my new residence. The problem is that I am now using a mobile router for my internet (the Nighthawk) and it appears that it doesn't have anywhere in its setting page to specify anything in relation to VOIP. Also, the unit doesn't have an outlet to plug my phone cable into (standard phone). At my previous address (where I had NBN) I plugged my phone cable into another modem (which I still have) and it worked perfectly (it had a dedicated spot for a telephone cable). Just wondering how I might get around this. Do I need to plug my previous modem into the Nighthawk using a blue or yellow internet/Ethernet cable and plug my phone into the previous modem? I tried this last night but I didn't get a dial tone I assume because the VOIP side of things (including my assigned telephone number) haven't/can't be configured on the Nighthawk, would that be correct. To make matters worse, I can't remember the user name and password for the previous modem to log on to it, and have even tried resetting it and using, admin/admin, and admin/password to no avail.

Any help you could provide would be so very appreciated.

Thanks heaps, Sue

  • I think you will need to contact your old ISP.

In the US, our phone numbers are portable, but that is different from being able to connect the phone to the old provider when we shift to a new ISP.  What happens here is that the phone number is transferred from the the old provider's network to the new provider's network.

One problem you have is that you have no way to connect your landline phone to any provider's network right now.  If you can connect it to your old providers phone network (likely with an ethernet VOIP adapter), then that will resolve it.  If they don't allow that, you'll need to find a new provider who does have an ethernet VOIP adapter, and work with them to transfer your old number.

One thing you should ask about is emergency services - where is the call answered if you dial 000, and how does that person know where you live?

Also, with this setup your VOIP phone will use your mobile data, and you'll be paying for that as weil the phone service itself.

For sure that won't work. It's not just the issues you raised.  Your modem acted as a bridge between your old router and your ISP's internet service.  There's nothing to bridge your new router too, it connects directly to the mobile network.

Thanks so much for your reply.  My old ISP were as helpful as they could be last night when I spoke to them (they gave me their SIP address etc) but your suggestion of an ethernet voip adapter sounds like something I might have to try.  Will see how that goes.  Ta again, Sue :-)
