Router has never allowed me to connect directly to the Internet
Although the Nighthawk M2 seems to be a personal Internet connection device, I have never been able to achieve this. My primary use has been to boost/bypass my ADSL router, and provide throughput for any system connected to my overall network. To do this, I have had to set the Advanced IP settings and provide Windows with a metric to choose the Nighhawk IP in preference of the slow ADSL router.
If I then try to use the Internet by selecting the router directly by my mobile, (ie. Settings > WiFi > Nighthawk's wifi name) - it has never worked. From my mobile, I normally connect to the main ADSL router and it happily gives me 10+ times the throughput (so I know it is going through the Nighthawk), but never for when I connect directly.
This has not mattered for some time, but I have two issues with this.
1. I am hoping to drop the ADSL router as it is pretty useless apart from providing something the Nighthawk cannot do. So, for now it is mysteriously useful.
2. I want to be able to take the Nighthawk with me on some occasions and use it alone (without any other bits, just like the brochure). This is the main part that doesn't work at all.
Is it that Netgear wants us to buy one of their WiFi boxes to make this work?

I have no idea what that means. What, exactly, is your (unspecified)
"my ADSL router"? What, exactly, is connected to what, exactly? (Hint:
If a device has different types of Ethernet ports, then "connected to
device" is not enough detail.)> [...] I have had to set the Advanced IP settings [...]
"had to"? For the benefit of the non-psychics in your audience,
which settings did you set to what? How, exactly, is your (unspecified)
"my ADSL router" configured?> [...] provide Windows with a metric [...]
"a metric"? "provide" what, how, exactly?

"this"? Who knows what "this" really is?My guess, based on what might be the most confusing description I've
ever read here (which is saying something), is that Netgear wants you to
use one router which is properly configured (say, by following the
documentation), rather than getting "creative", and tangling two
different routers together into one big mess. But that's only my guess. You have posted your message in the section of this community given over to Nighthawk WiFi Routers. (This is easily done, given Netgear's complicated community structure.)
Many questions apply to different types of device, so you might get responses here, but you might get more help, and find earlier questions and answers specific to your hardware, in the appropriate section for your device. That's probably here:
Mobile Routers, Hotspots & Modems
These are specialist kit that doesn't share a lot of controls and features with standard Nighthawk WiFi Routers, hence its own bolt hole.- Mark_SpencerAspirant
Thanks for that, I will try and reform this as it is an interesting issue.
