Difference between tagged, untagged and "no" state?

While I'm relatively new to VLANs, I think I have a handle on tagged and untagged ports. However, in Netgear, what does the third "blank" state do? (screenshot attached)

  • Empty means not associated - neither tagged nor untagged - to that VLAN.

So should ports be unassociated by default, or untagged on VLAN 1?

In the advanced 802.1Q mode, the default is VLAN ID 1, PVID 1, [U]ntagged for all Smart Managed switch ports. This makes it working like a basic unmanaged switch.
