Expanding the XS728T Switch
Hello all, This is probably bit of a beginner question, however we are running the Smart Managed 24 Port XS728T Switch and since we're out of 10Gbe ports, we need to expand. I refered to ...

Is that not possible ?
Hello Lukas,
Yes, of course this is possible. You can (for example) use two XS728T and establish a trunk connection using 2..4 SFP+ based connections. The most affordable way is using 10G DAC cables like the Netgear AXC763 (or compatible) available in 1m and 3m length when set-up the devices side-by-side. Set-up multiple trunk ports in a 802.3ad LACP LAG, and use tagged VLANs of course.
The difference when using a stacked system is that you can maintain one logical switch, while the administration on multiple Smart Managed Pro switches is done per switch.

Hi Eric,
Thank you for your reply, I am still a bit confused. I understand that the S3300 supports 10g uplinks as a connection between the stack, however it only has 1g ports.
If we wanted to expand the XS728T and have 10g ports, why aren't we able to just buy another XS728T and connect them via SFP+ ?
Is that not possible ?
Thanks again,
Lukas

Mar 14, 2018Hi ldreser,
S3300 10G port support working at Stack or Ethernet mode, it's depend your config.
If you want to stacking many switches, you need set the 10G port to Stack mode between stacking units. If you want to connect to other switch via 10G port, you need set the 10G port to Ethernet mode. Beside, this config should be apply after reload switch.
There is some different between XS728T and S3300:
1. XS728T support more 10G ports, S3300 only 4 10G ports;
2. S3300 support stacking, but XS728T not support;
So you can select the right one according to your requirement.
Hope it helps!
