We have ProSafe GS748Tv4H2 deployed on our exhibit network (think museum) since 2014. We've begun the process of updating hardware attached to those switches. We've found that newer model NICs on the computers we are installing are not recognized by the switch at all.
Long before Geisterbanh on the switch, I suspect your newer (unknown) Ethernet adapters on the older computers (unknown OS) are not properly configured, recognized and loaded with the driver Microcode. In general, Ethernet (10...1000Mb/s) is extremely reliable.
Are random selected, known working Ethernet adapters, no longer working on the switch (all or in group of eight) ? This would indicate a possible switch issue (or more a failure) then.
Back to 2016 (GS748Tv4 Firmware Version 5.4.1.17), I have not spotted possible bootloader updates where the potentially forgotten firmware updates lead to a dead switch.
