NVR to Netgear XS716T
Can I hook a security cam NVR to my 716 directly rather than the router first? How do I avoid the NVR assigning ip addresses that may conflict with the switch assignement so I am told would happen. ...

Much to vague.
Some NVR systems can run on the same network (NVR and cameras on the same LAN, others have only one port to connect to the system and offer a dedicated network on the camera ports, intended to connect one camera per port, probably even PoE powered, with it's dedicated DHCP server and IP subnet.
If you talk of the single port intended to connect an NVR system to a router - so you have access to the NVR system on your LAN, and the NVR system can connect to the Internet e.g. for remote or cloud based monitoring - yes, this is certainly possible.

The NV5216E-8P Amcrest NVR is what I am considering. The tech support there is less than informed but what I was told is it has to be connected to my router or I will have IP conflicts. The cameras in this model connect to the NVR then one port to router so I am told.
My current set up is ATT fiber to ONT to ATT router to Ethernet smart switch then everything plugged into that. I have a Cat6a to upstairs wireless router so that family can have wifi for iphones, etc.
I am no expert and that ethernet switch is WAY over my head and I look forward to taking classes just out of personal interest but for now would like to install a few security cameras.
It seems that what you are saying is that I could connect NVR to Ethernet switch if the NVR has DHCP and creates is own "internal" network to avoid IP conflicts with the switch.....my words as I am learning
If thats the case I could perhaps get on thier website and see if some user smarter than the tech guys I am speaking to know for sure or call back again and see if I can find someone more familiar with more complex networking.
