Thanks for your reply.
Crashed was an unprecise term. The switch waas no longer reachable.
The untagged default VLAN and all tagged VLANs were sent to port 4 of the router. Not sure what other configuration you are referring to. I have attached a PNG of the config I have done.
I#m a sofware guy not an infrastructure man and this is a home project for me. My plan here is to separate out the traffic from my WAP. But first of all I have to prove that VLANs are being propagated. So I configured Port 4 with LAN2 on the switch just to see if the tthe attached host would pick up an IP address from that VLAB. I didn't
At the moment all I see is failure and I have no idea how to track down where the pronlem is.

Ok, this was my assumption, too. Hey, it requires some apotions, these VLAN configs are not very complex for a software pro either - you can handle this!.
Now you have to put up the same config on the switch. For the trunk from the router (you did a perfect config for the port #4 there!) the similar config must be done on the GS305EP, port #5
The Gigabit Ethernet Plus Switches User Manual does show the "Manage advanced 802.1Q VLANs" (that's the mode you need for such a config) with the details on how to apply the above settings. Sorry, missed this part of the guideline before.
in general, the VLANs must be defined on the switch. The ports must be defined for which VLAN ID tags are accepted, and to which VLAN the untegged frames entering the switch port are assigned to - that's what the PVID.
Hope this helps now!

Thanks very much. I will have another attempt tomorrow!

Thanks so much for that suggestion. I am definitely on the right track. But I still need a little more help.
I have attached three screen shots in one JPEG. I have passed VLAN_ID = 20 (subnet 192.168.2.1/24) to the switch and the default untagged VLAN, subnet 192.168.1.1/24
I am testing on Port 4 to see if I can get an IP address in the server attached to that port. I have made VLAN_ID 20 the default vlan on that port. If I remove the default vlan from the port, I lose connectivity to the switch and have to reset to factory settings. i am passing VLAN 20 to port 5.
But the server on Port 4 refuses to get an IP address at all.
Please could you look at my screen shots to see if you can see anything wrong.
Many thanks

I have fixed it!!!! As I was walking over the fields this afternoon I realised that I I should have been setting the port with the Linux host to be untaggedand setting the PVID to the VLAN I wanted to be the default I want for that port. Now everything works as I want it to work.
Thanks v much for your assistance.

Great! This is what is named sometimes an access port for PVID x == one VLAN x untagged, PVID x, and no other VLAN memberships..

Thanks Kurt,
The light bulb moment for me was realising that you could have a number of VLANS tagged or untagged for a given subnet. Once I realised that the solution came easily. Now my fire TV has access only to my Raspberry Pi and the internet, which is how I wanted it.
Now I just have to figure out the management LAN so I casn administer all the hosts on the various subnets all from one place!
