Surprise of all surprises. Just after posting my original comment I had a wild idea to try going all the way back to the initial firmware release. I did that using Internet Explorer on a Windows 7 PC and amazingly the firmware flashed successfully. I'm now back into the configuration, still using the 192.168.0.239 IP address.
Once back in I was able to successfully flash the v2.00.12 firmware. Once that worked I was able to flash up to the 2.06.16 version.
So far so good. We'll see how things go.
