PVID vs VLAN member vs VLAN tag

Hi All!

First day on holiday but still thinking about some hypotesis I talked with a collegue of mine on last day of work.

Please see here:

I know that "standard" config is (ie):

PVID: 1    Member: 1,12,20   Tag: 12,20

So, my (our) questions are:

g2: what will happen with missing "1" membership? what will be "12" useful for?

g3: randomly added "1" tag to a "full 1" port. maybe related with "accettable frame types"?

g4: same of g3 but with a vlan12 correctly working, right?

g5: same of g2 but with a vlan12 correctly working, right?

gX: tried also this (test/random/useless 😁) config but OS correctly returned me an error:

PVID: 1    Member: 12   Tag: 20

Thanks for your attention and help!

V.

The PVID defines the VLAN untgged frames will be assigned to.

Either use the VLAN and PVID (same number) for an access port where you connect computer, devices, or switches without  VLAN tag, or use a port for trunk carrying the VLAN ID in the tag. You need to become clear about the difference.

The PVID 1 will assign untagged frames flowing into the switch port to the VLAN 1, the PVID 12 will assign untagged frames to the VLAN 12.

Tht why you can only configure -one- PVID on a port (or  LAG).

Your config for g5 with the PVID 20, but the port is member of the VLAN 1 and 12 only (tagged or untgged).

Or do you like to intend configure black hole for untagged frames flowing into the switch?

      Hi.

Thanks for your reply but you wrote things I already know.

I try to simplify my question: what following config is useful for (if it could be...)?

      PVID:1    Member:2    Tag:none

      Bye

Like g5 example I've alredy explained, g2 config does not make any sense, too.

Untagged frames will be assigned to the VLAN 1 (as per the PVID config), but since it's only an untgged member of the VLAN 12, no communication can ever be estblished. Yet another black hole.
