In can you haven't already noticed, NETGEAR have just published WAX210 firmware version 1.1.0.36 - which allows for SSID passphrases between 8-63 characters WITHOUT any additional, non-standard, restrictions such as upper case or special characters.
I've just downloaded and installed this firmware version and can confirm that it behaves as it should.
Note: the new firmware now includes a check-box, enabled by default, which still enforces the additional restrictions - but this can now be disabled on the same page as where the SSID passphrase is specified.
