I finally pulled the trigger and installed the new 16-port GS116NA ethernet switch.
POOOOOF!
Problems solved. Apparently it was a bad 8-port ethernet switch that gave up the ghost and was cause all kinds of problems that did not make the problem obvious!

It is easy to identify if the switch is running some problems because this is just a plug-and-play device by isolating each port or try replacing an ethernet cable. It is also a good choice to have a 16-port switch to your network.
