JUST looking for home networking advise
I have tried to upgrade my very old network at home, but keep running into thinks I know nothing about!
I have called, (I think) every number Netgear publishes, and aside from repeatedly waiting hours to speak with a (barely) English speaking Indian (??) representative, I have gotten nowhere.
I either am not understood or they insist on having MY SERIAL NUMBER, which I can't provide, as I am looking for advise, not troubleshooting.
What I have is:
A 1.2GB ISP plan from Comcast cable. a new ARRIS S33 cable modem, a Netgear GS116v2 Switch (already had since it 1st came out), and two new ARRIS AX11000 routers. I have figured out (I think/hope/pray) that I can hook the 2.5GB line from the modem to one of the AX11000 routers, then go from that router to the Netgear switch, and the 2nd AX11000 router to the switch, to provide the several wired devices I have, as well as the Wi-Fi routers to cover my house with its convoluted hallways and dead spots. Bu(t), the house was previously wired with CAT5e cable! It will not support the speeds needed for this system to operate properly.
I found an ad for Netgears 5-Speed Muliti-Gigibit switches that claim to be able to provide the needed speeds (5 times ?) on older type cable such as I have. I have spent the entire week trying to get anyone/someone at Netgear to explain how that can work, if it indeed can, so I could fix my problems. SO far, frustration and a headache is all I have gained through 5 FULL days of trying.
Can someone explain this to me, and if it will or will not do what I need? Please use itty bitty words, because as I approach my eighties, I sometimes struggle when asked "how are you?" ! LOL
Have pity on an old Veteran, who just wants to "fly fast" until I start to "Fade away" as Gen. Patton said.
Thanks and God Bless

If you wanna see wired speeds from your ISP modem thru your router to end point devices thru a SWITCH with 2.5Gb speeds on the wire you'll need a 2.5Gb or higher LAN switch and also need to use CAT6A STP cabling to ensure your getting these high speeds well and accurately. CAT5E doesn't support 2.5Gb speeds. CAT6 UTP is recommended for most 1Gb speeds. I have NGs XS505M just in a couple of weeks ago. Working with my Orbi 9 series system.

Don’t mean to argue, but what I asked, was about a Netgear ad that claimed “they” could run fast speeds over old cable. Here are a couple pieces from their URLhttps://www.netgear.com/business/wired/switches/multi-gig/

I guess that possible however depending upon quality of older cable, it may or may not work well.
For the cost of upgrading to newer CAT6 or STP, it's well worth going with the best thats out there IMO.

Hello Paul, Welcome to the Netgear Community!
You already figured the decent Gigabit switch can handle up to Gigabit only. For operating 10 Gigabit, decent cabling is mandatory. Very different for MultiGig, 2.5 or 5 Gigabit, correct installed Cat5E installations perform well.
