Well I've decided to send the FVS318G back and use the Gateway firewall.
The gatway is supplied by the ISP so if and when I forgo the retal fee and buy my own gateway/modem I may be right back here where I started.
Till then...
Thx!

Dane,
Unfortunately no it still would not connect. I entered the;
IPv4 Address;
IPv4 Subnet Mask;
IPv4 Default Gateway;
IPv4 DNS Servers, (primary) & (secondary)
... matching what the computer was reporting connected directly to the gateway in bridge mode. II did not enter any IPv6 settings. Connecting the computer directly to the gateway in bridge mode or connecting through the GS108E in any mode and I'm up and online in 2-5 minutes reliably. With the FVS318 its as if by luck I got it to work the couple times I did.

Hi OldPCGuy,
Since you have no problems with your previous cable modem and the FVS318Gv2, what I am thinking is its possible that it could be a compatibility issue between the Technicolor TC8717C and the FVS318Gv2. With regard to this, I encourage you to open an online case with NETGEAR Support for further assistance.
Regards,
