FVS318Gv2 Admin Blocked to Login From WAN Side

Hello everyone!

This is probably a total n00b problem but here goes.  I inherited a three server set up with some connections going to a Netgear GS608 switch and out to the internet, and some going to a FVS318Gv2 firewall appliance, then to the switch, and then out (see diagram below).  I have no idea why, and I'm planning on fixing it so all goes through the firewall.

So here's my first problem--I can't log in to the FVS318Gv2 via the WAN login.  I get the "Blocked to Login From WAN side" error no matter which admin user name and password combo I use.  I think they blocked the admin user when they set it up.  Or, it's another password that my predecessor changed and didn't write down anywhere.  Is there a way to access the firewall without this?  I don't have a DB9 connector and would have no idea what would plug into it.  I think my final answer will be to reset the router and start over, but that is my last resort.

This all started because we are getting a large amount of failed logins on the data server, and I'd like to lock it down more.  So, if y'all know of a way to do that (without knowing how to edit the firewall), I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks!

Erin

  • Hello bclccataloger,

    Welcome to the community!

Were you able to access the UI when on the LAN?  There is a policy set on the admin user by default to block the account to login from the WAN. This is a security mechanism as the admin password is a default password easily available on the internet. To disable this feature go to Users - Users. For the admin user click on Policies. De-select the option "Deny Login from WAN Interface" and click Apply. You'll also need to change the password back to its default password before changing this settings.

Let me know if it works.

    Thanks,

Thanks!  The keyword there is "LAN."  I had only tried logging using the IP assigned to that firewall, not the generic one that it came with.  Booyah, I'm in.  See, I told ya it was a newbie question.  You saved me from an impending migraine.
