Thanks for your responses. Just for your information I got it working in the end by replacing the BT Business Hub3 with an older BT 2700HGV router and setting this to bridge mode, there was also a setting in the half hidden screen home/mdc to disable the routing functionality. All seemed to work ok then.
The Netgear was setup as PPPoE, so there seems to be no problem.
