FVS318N can't connect over WIFI

Hi

I've just replaced my aged DGFV338 with a DM111PV2 modem and FVS318N wireless router. The changeover has been OK but I've got an issue with WIFI.

My laptop will connect without a problem to the local network using a wire and I can see and talk to all the computers and my Buffalo LinkStation NAS drive.

However, the wireless connection is proving to be very frustrating, I can see eveything else on both the LAN and the VPN connection to the office, but for some reason some connections, in particular the local NAS won't connect. I get some obscure error message complaining about a profile.

The laptop runs Vista Ultimate and is running Outpost firewall, I've been through everything I can think of, and I've tried disabling the firewall, all to no avail.

I suspect the 'problem' lies with the router and the wireless connection but I'd be pleased to see other people's ideas.

For the moment I'll stick with a patch cord!

Just to update the precise error message is:

    "Error code: 0x80070035
The network path was not found"

If I click on diagnose I then get LS-WXL32A-2TB is not a valid host name.

Excuse me, but it is valid and has been for the past two years!

I've also tried flushing the DNS cache without success.

Now out of interest I can connect to my office NAS drive over the VPN connection, also I can connect to all other devices on the local network, so it seems to be a peculiarity of the local NAS drive which I can connect to when I use a patch cord plugged directly into the router.
  • You may need to put trouble ticket with support .

It is weired behaviors. I don't think this model had wireless isolation features that block comm between the wired and wireless
  • Hi June

It is strange behaviour, I've found a workaround by adding the device to the 'hosts' file on the laptop, but of course that's only OK when the device has a fixed IP address.

I have since tried my netbook using WIFI and that exhibits exactly the same behaviour so I guess that there is something going on with the local DNS.

I'll raise a ticket and see how it develops.
  • Hi June

Netgear support have picked this up and I'm working through their suggestions. But I have confirmed that when both my Notebook and Netbook computers are connected by a cable they work faultlessly, but over WIFI they can't find some hosts.

I've also tried a WIFI link with no security and that doesn't work properly either.

    Weird.
  • Hi June

I've found the answer, it was the wireless mode, it was set to 'ng', I had to change it to 'g and b'.

    That's all that was required.

    Thank you for your suggestions.
  • Even with firmware 4.3.1-31 the wi-fi is problematic when running 802.11n; I found this was solved by restricting it to b/g, which will limit the bandwidth to less than the FVS318N can handle, but at least makes to unit usable.
