You shouldn't use such a big subnet mask. In the case of most modems, if you have it ahead of the main router, and they are on different subnets, it will let you access it at the 100.1 address, even if it is giving your router a public IP address. This isn't always the case. This is why usually people recommend to bridge / DMZ the modem to the router, depending on the options, so you only really need to configure or adjust one device, instead of 2 for everything you do. Makes life simple :)
