Is it possible to connect my FVS336Gv1 through VirginMedia Superhub?

I'm no expert on networking but I can usually find my way around major components, but this one has me stumped.

I built a network configuration based on FVS336Gv1 connected to GS724TP managed switch as my LAN and connected the FVS336Gv1 to a VirginMedia Business (VMB) cable modem/router on the WAN1 port. My office is wired to the GS724TP router. Simple but effective. It all worked perfectly until Sunday when the Virgin cable modem just died. I can't fault VMB for their response times - they supplied me with a new cable modem on Sunday. I thought the new cable modem would simply slot into the existing LAN configuration, but no. Since Sunday, I can't get an Internet connection through the router/firewall; only if I connect directly to the ethernet port on the router of the new cable modem. As far as VMB are concerned they have fulfilled their SLA and have provided me with a 50mB service, but I can't seem to connect my LAN to it. Can anyone please explain how simply replacing this one component has thrown out my entire LAN configuration?

The cable modem has a static IP address. The local IP address is 192.168.0.1. My LAN is configured to have a local IP address of 192.168.1.1. DHCP is switched on on both the cable modem and the FVS336G. I've tried switching them off alternately, but no joy.

When I called VMB for technical support, I was told it is impossible to connect one router to another - but that is exactly what I had in place until Sunday. Their solution was to purchase another 6 static IP addresses. I'm confused why it worked before without 6 (it was working with just 1). They could not answer my question about whether I need to have DHCP switched on on the cable modem if it is configured with a static IP Address. Can anyone answer that?

Do I need to setup a bridge between the FVS336Gv1 and the cable modem? If so, how?

Nothing else changed. Is this just down to black arts or am I being stupid and missing something obvious?

  • Until Sunday I had a simple setup of LAN to WAN using Virgin Media Business 50Mb service. GS724TP managed switch connected to FVS336Gv1 firewall/router connected to VirginMedia Business (VMB) cable modem/router to the outside world. It all worked beautifully but on Sunday the cable modem just died. VMB responded quickly and provided me with a new cable modem on Sunday, but since then I can't see the Internet through my existing LAN configuration.

I can't understand why the existing LAN configuration won't work when only the cable modem router was replaced and it was a straight model swap. Has anyone else come across this problem?

When I contacted VMB for tech support, they told me it's not possible to connect a router to a router and I'd need to purchase 6 static IP addresses to make it work????? Until Sunday, I had only 1 static IP address configured on the cable modem router and it worked fine.

Do I need to bridge the routers to get through from the LAN to WAN to Internet?
Do I need to have DHCP switched on on both FVS336gv1 and the cable modem/router? I've tried switching each one off alternately, but no joy. They are connected from the WAN1 port of the FVS336Gv1 to the 1st ethernet port on the cable modem. The GS724TP is connected from a vacant port to an ethernet port on the FVS336gv1. Could it be any simpler?

The domestic version of the VM superhub allows the router part to be switched off, to use it just as a modem, but the VMB version doesn't have this option (at least it's not shown).

I've reset all of the Netgear kit back to factory settings to try with a clean "out of the box" configuration but still the magical connection eludes me.

    Any ideas gratefully accepted.
  • You need to bridge the Virgin router so that the 336 gets the public IP.
