Netgear wifi access point makes wifi worse near the modem

I recently added a Net Gear access point (WAX610PA). It is wired directly to modem via a CAT5 cable. It is positioned at the back of the house where the home office is located and has improved wifi in the whole back of the house and backyard. Unfortunately the wifi in the front of the house (where the actual modem resides) is now far worse! My laptop won't connect from the front bedroom or basement. Do I need a second, expensive, access point? Is there a setting I can adjust? Should it be set as a mesh extender instead?

Make sure the 2 devices are using different wifi channels for both 2.4ghz and the 5ghz.

They shouldn't be on the same ones.

for the 5ghz, put one on the lower 32-48 and the other on the higher 149+ band.

thank you for taking the time to reply! I am assuming that by "2 devices" you mean my modem and the Netgear Access Point? If I simply change the channels for the Access Point in Insight app would that work (and not touch modem?). Again, thanks!

yes by the 2 devices I mean modem/access point.
you can just change it on the access point but you'd want to use some type of scanner to see what channels the modem is on. (plus others in your area).

I usually use the free version if inssider or winfi
