WAC124 router - Massive packet loss only on 5GHz Wi-Fi

Hi all,

My Essentials Wireless (WAC124) #WAC124 router is about 4 months out of warranty. When connected to its 5GHz network and using real-time connectivity apps like online games, I'm having a huge amount of packet loss. Looking at the connection with Wireshark/npcap while playing a game shows that UDP packets aren't making it through most of the time, a lot of data is missing. As a test, I tried constantly pinging the game server in the background while the game is lagging, and almost all of the ping packets are coming back with the expected latency (~40ms) except for a very occasional timeout. Meanwhile, the game has 5+ second stretches where it receives no data at all

Connecting to the router with Ethernet and disabling 5GHz Wi-Fi both fix the issue.

I have tried:

  • Factory resetting and setting up everything from scratch
  • Moving the router
  • Sitting the computer right next to the router
  • Using the same computer and game on a different 5GHz connection (no issues at all)

Any suggestions? I attached a screenshot of my 5GHz settings from the web interface (switched off right now to force everything to 2.4GHz).

  • Dane,

Thanks for the helpful response! Sorry for the delay, I wasn't able to log in to the forum here, I finally cleared the site cookies and that fixed it.

I actually solved the problem by upgrading the router's firmware to OpenWRT. I'm not sure if it was a bug in the OEM firmware or radio interference that OpenWRT is better able to handle, but it worked regardless.

I highly recommend switching to OpenWRT to anyone else who owns this router. It's way more secure and has some great features. Also, the NETGEAR firmware stores the admin password in plaintext (go through the "forgot password" thing and it'll just give it to you!)

      valpo2000,

      Welcome to the community! 🙂

Let us try to change the WiFi throughput mode for the 5GHz band.  On the web-GUI, go to ADVANCED > Advanced Setup > Advanced Wireless Settings. From the Mode menu for the 5GHz radio, kindly select "Up to 800 Mbps" then click Apply.  Kindly try to reconnect your wireless devices tot he 5GHz SSID and observe if the same problem will occur.

What is the current firmware version of your WAC124?  If ever its not yet the latest version, I suggest you to update it then observe if the same problem will occur.  The latest WAC124 firmware is v1.0.4.9 and you can download it here.

      Regards,
