Orbi Pro SXR30 SXS30 wired backhaul
I have a brand new Orbi setup and having nothing but issues with it. My setup is: Downstairs Virgin router->switch with SXR 30 plugged into it Switch->cat5 cable through ceiling to middle floor ...
- Jun 08, 2022I didn't do anything differently in terms of config, except that I did it all using the web interface rather than the stupid app.
This time everything worked the way it was supposed to.
I've got all the cabling setup exactly the same way. Although in testing the wireless backhaul is actually working quite well, so might leave it wireless for easier locating.
As promised, the attached images show the satellite connected via wireless Vs wired backhaul between the router and the satellite. Note that the wireless part being lit up or not. I've not seen this information clearly shown with screenshots anywhere, only in the Orbi app, so hopefully it's helpful to someone!

The User Manual for the SXR30 system may hold information:
https://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/SXK30/SXK30_UM_EN.pdf
Page 29 explains how to access the web management using a web browser.
Page 154 shows how to access the Attached Devices display that will show how the satellites are connected to the router and which devices are connected to each unit.
It is not clear to me why there would be a switch between the Virgin router and the Orbi router.
The more common solution is to connect the Orbi directly to the ISP device and place any switches needed for that location behind the Orbi.

Sorry, that was an oversight in the explanation.
It is actually
Downstairs
Virgin router->SXR 30->switch with->Cat5 cable through ceiling to middle floor
Middle floor
Cat5 from downstairs->Switch->Cat 5 to loft
Loft
Cat5 from middle floor->Switch-> SXS30
So the only/correct way to confirm a satellite is working via wired backhaul is that it shows in the 'wired' section of the attached devices section, is that right? That seems rather poor. There is a whole section of the app dedicated to satellites, but it doesn't mention it in there... đ
I have read the manual several times and the diagrams. The setup is essentially diagram 3, but with an extra switch->switch in the middle. But as far as I can see that should work, it does with any other setup like this.
I found a post on here from someone saying that it only works if you have nothing else connected to the switches, but that seems wrong...
In any event, the switches can be ignored really. As I said, I can't seem to get it to work/confirm that it is working when I have just the satellite connected directly to the router. I did this with a 10m Cat5 cable, placed the satellite in another room with a thick wall between it and the main router. I then put WiFi devices in the 2nd room with the satellite. I confirmed they are connected to the satellite and are getting roughly 50% throughput! I unplug the satellite and they get around 90% throughput from the main router!
