Forced to use Nighthawk app to set up new hardware and it sucks out loud
I tried to set up the modem/router manually, following the printed instructions to the letter. No good. Had to download the app, which I wanted to avoid for precisely the experience I had. Who wrote this app? Did ANYONE test it? Maddening. Wanders in circles. I finally called the support number, waited on hold, someone with an accent that suggested they were Not From Around Here answer and my call was immediately cut off. I am livid.

It is not required to use the NH app to setup. For routers and gateway modems, can use there web page:

I use this all the time.

Many people miss the "i don't haver a smart phone" option at the bottom of the page when they navigate to the initial install page using a PC on install. I prefer that route.

As FURRYe38 and plemans have pointed out, all Netgear routers allow the user to configure the device using a web browser.
As more and more customers do not have desktops, laptops, or even tablets with screens large enough to use the web interface, most manufacturers have turned to smartphone apps.
