How can I make the parental control filter work separately on different devices?

Hi Everyone!

I had tried looking for an answer prior to posting this question.  If I missed something, by all means you can point me to the right direction.

I would like to limit my son from using the internet.  So, I had set up the Default Filter to 'None' and added a specific time block with 'High' filter in it.  Accordingly, I created a bypass account for myself and my husband giving us 'None' filter at all time.

Now, according to Netgear instructions, I need to log on to the Genie App (of course with my--Admin account!) in my son's device and activate the Default Filter. But as soon as I do that, it changes the filter for other devices at home with the same as my sons'! the best part is...the times blocked are not even working...and full access continues!

Help...am I missing something?

Thanks in advance!

    Hi DexterJB,

Thank you so much for all the help. I found the solution to the problem!

I found out that not ALL categories under the "High Filter" are being blocked. Exactly the main reason why my son could still access the internet.  Therefore, I chose the "Custom Filter" and checked every single one of them. Whoala!

    Again, thanks!

    Hi be_zwe,

Alternatively, you can try using the per device filtering through the Network Map of the NETGEAR genie app/program. You can individually set the filtering level for each of the connected device in the network. You can check the link below.

  • Hi DexterJB,

Thanks for the response to my enquiry!

I tried doing that, but the filter itself is not working.  Me and my husband both have the "No-Filter" as a bypass account (I think that's ok...I would never know), while my son has the Default Filter.

The Default Filter intended for my son is set to "High", on specific times of the day.  This one's not working.

    Any other suggestion? Thanks!

      Hi be_zwe,

Please make sure that the DNS values on the router are set to the OpenDNS values which are 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. You can check this by accessing the router UI.

      Hi @be_zwe,

      1. Does the "High" filter work for your devices if you don't login to your bypass account?

      2. Have you tried setting the default filtering level to "High" or any other level other than "None" to test if the filtering works? If not, please do so.

Note: Filtering may not take effect immediately since it is DNS based. Please give about 30 minutes to an hour.

      Regards,

        Hi DexterJB,

The "High" filter worked...with my husbands device (android)...but, not with mine(iPhone).  He was being blocked from a couple of websites.

Overall, my son can still use the internet 24/7. :-(

Perhaps, the router itself has some defect/technical problems?

        Thanks,

        B
