Netgear Genie with XAV 1301 and Windows 10

I use Netgear Genie for just one reason. Checking the speed of my Powerline Adapters. I currently have 3 off XAV1301 and 1 off XAVN2001. Unfortunately there  is some history to this. There was once a dedicated App from Netgear to do this. But when I purchased some new Powerline Adapters I then had a mixture of V1 and V2 and the App ceased to work. So I contacted Netgear Support and they told me to use Netgear Genie. That worked fine.

At some later date I updated Netgear Genie. This then always showed the upload speed to be slower than it was. I put this down to my old PC (running Windows Vista) and I reinstalled the old version. Fine.

The Vista PC has now died. I have a new one running Windows 10. Like others I had issues installing the latest Netgear Genie. The advice from the moderator was use V2.4.12, which I did. This at least installs and runs. However though the download sped is correct, all the uploads speeds are always showing as 10Mbps. I know it is faster than this. OK, I thought, reinstall the very old version I used on my Vista PC. But this refuses to install, even if I run the install in Vista SP2 compatibility mode.

So - can anyone advise me how I might get the upload speed showing as something other than 10Mbs, when I know it is running faster than that (download speeds are close to the maximum, showing about 190Mbps).

Thanks

    Hi Royalman,

    1. What version of NETGEAR Genie did you previously had with your Vista computer?

    2. What was the link rate speed did it show you before on your powerline adapters?

      Hi Dexter,

My Download speeds are consistently in the range 185Mbs to 195Mbs. And the uploads were of a similar order.

I don't know what version of Genie was running on my old Vista PC as it died suddenly and wasn't worth repairing. I have found the install file from my backup and it is was just called NETGEARGenie-install. Later versions of Netgear Genie seem to have the version number embedded in the name of the install file you download. It's a shame Netgear didn't do this on earlier versions.

As it happens my preferred solution would be to use the Powerline Utility. Looking last night I see that is now at version 3.1.0.4. The version I couldn't get going with both V1 and V2 of the XAV1301 was 2.2.27.1. Let me try that latest version of the Powerline Utility as Netgear are saying it is Windows 10 compatible.

Do you know if Netgear will continue to fix bugs in the Powerline Utility? Or has any ongoing development ceased?

      Hi Dexter,

After reinstalling Netgear Genie it does recognize XAV1301 V1 and V2. However the V2 upload speed shows as between 25 and 30 Mbps, while the V1 still shows consistent upload speeds of exactly 10Mbps. All the download speeds are in excess of 150Mbps.

My combination of Power Adapters in this final configuration were:

      1 off XAVN 2001 V2

      3 off XAV 1301 V1

      1 off XAV 1301 V2

      Thanks

        Hi Royalman,

Thank you for the updates. Can you please provide screenshots of the utility and NETGEAR Genie program showing the speeds?

        Regards,

  • Hi Dexter,

    So - I quick update.

    1. Powerline Utility. Installed V3.1.0.4. The latest. Works fine with my XAVB1301 V1 Powerline Adapters. Both upload and download speeds in excess of 150 Mbps for all Adapters. Replaced one of the V1 Adapters with a XAVB1301 V2 Adaper. Set up the security. Connected it all up. But the Powerline Utility does not recognise it. The Powerline Utility only seems to recognise V1 Adapters. But I know the Adapter is working because it was connected to an Internet radio on which I could hear an Internet radio station. I get the impression that Netgear are no longer upgrading the Powerline Utility? Is that correct?

    2. So it's back Netgear Genie which I then re-installed (V2.4.12). Though not the latest, the posts seem to indicate this is the one to use for Windows 10. But all the upload speeds showing as just 10Mbps.

So any ideas on why this might be the case.

    Thanks
