Nightgear XR500 Crashes/Restarts when Large Wifi Download

Hello everyone.

I have an issue with my XR500 which has started happening around 6 months ago intermittently.

Background

I have a 100Mbps line in from Virgin Media using the superhub as a simple modem, I route all my DNS through my Server running Pihole.

My house is very heavy on internet tech, There are at least 4 phones, 7 alexa's, 4 Xboxes (Series X/S's) 2 PC's, 2 tablets, 1 server running multiple dockerised applications, 4 smart TV's.

The issue:

The XR500 has a habit of performing a complete reboot, knocking everything of the internet as soon as one of the Xboxes that are using Wifi, decide to download a large file or game. Anything wired in doesn't seem to have an issue. I have tested this multiple times, when gaming with the kids and we all decide to update a game, I can guarantee that we will get a 2-3 minute reboot cycle.

I have checked the logs when this happens and can't see anything suspicious. I even had the log screen open during the reboot to see what it said but there wasn't anything obvious.  Once it reboots, the logs end up getting cleared.

Tonight was the last straw, I decided to update my Mac and it did a 6-10gb update. During that, the XR500 rebooted forcing a re-download and it knocked everything off the network.

Has anyone had anything similar?

My resolution steps so far:
- I reset the firmware to one over 1 year ago  - made no difference.

- I disconnected a wifi extender that I thought could have been interferring - no difference made

- I wired up one of the other xboxes using home plugs, it solved the issue for that device but the speeds were reduced. The issue still happened with the remaining xbox.

Does this happen if the game consoles are ethernet connected to the router?

What Firmware version is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6 is recommended.

Is Armor enabled on the router?

Does this happen after a factory reset and setup from scratch and don't use PiHole configuration?

  • Definitely not a common issue and will be harder to diagnose if the log isn't showing anything/cleared after a reboot. One thing it could be though - do you have the XR500 connected to a power extender or direct to a wall outlet? If an extender try direct, do you get the same issue then?
