Nighthawk XR500... potential issue with wifi

I have the XR500.  Most of the devices I really care about are hardwired and I don't have any issues with those.  However, wifi is a different story.  Promised speeds from the ISP are 400d/40u.  On 2.4 ghz band... if I'm standing right in front of the router... I can get 60d/20u (rough est).  However, if I begin to move away from the router... and I'm not talking about far... it drops alot.  If I go out into our sunroom.... speeds drop so far that its almost not usable... sometimes 5d / <1up.  I feel like I've tried everything.

Could anyone assist me with this?  If I go out in the sunroom on 5ghz band... its MUCH better.  It just seems like the range on my 2.4 ghz band is really bad.  Even though it looks like its getting good signal... speeds drop dramatically when I get just a little waise from the router... house is only 2k sq/ft and speeds drop dramatically on the same floor.

FYI - I had an old asus router in my basement (and my nighthawk is even much more centrally located)... and the asus provided consistent coverage throughout the WHOLE house...

Any help is greatly appreciated!

  • Is there anything immediately surrounding the router that would impede the signal? This could be its in a wooden cabinet for example, even devices that are wireless (wireless headphones for example) that are in close proximity can interfere with the signal.

So let me ask this... when you say immediately around it.. you're meaning something in close proximity to the actual router?  Because my routers used to always be in the basement.. with a couple of floors between it and the main floor... and I've never had issue with that in the past...

I will say, when I moved my router to a more centralized location.. it was moved into a closet... I suppose I can move it out of the closet and see what happens!

Yes that's right. Definitely move it out of the closest if possible and see if that improves the speeds. Ideally you don't want to have any wireless devices within 3 feet of the router and don't have the router on a metal surface as that can also interfere with the signal.
