It would be really helpful to know the brand/model of equipment you are asking about, which generally consists of:
- A device provided by the Internet Service Provider (ISP), which can be
a. a cable modem
b. a fiber optic network terminator (ONT)
c. a device which combines one of those devices with a WiFi router - Sometimes there is an additional WiFi router in addition to whatever the ISP has provided.
Generally, this sort of question is asked when attempting to connect some sort of Internet of Things (IoT) device to the WiFi network. The vast majority of these devices do not require any action to do taken regarding the WiFi network. "they simply work" Customers are often misled because the device documentation states in Bold Type "requires 2.4G WiFi". This is similar to a flashlight stating, "requires 2 C-cell batteries." i.e. without 2 of that size battery, the flashlight cannot work. Since 99.99% of WiFi systems provide 2.4G WiFi, this notice is more of a distraction than of any use.
