Another CBR750 and Comcast/Xfiniity ISP Service Issue

Hi,

I'm creating this post in response to https://community.netgear.com/t5/Orbi-with-Built-in-Cable-Modem/NOTICE-CBR750-and-Comcast-Xfiniity-ISP-Service-Issue/m-p/2286189

I have a CBR750 with 2 satellites. All are on the latest firmware version:

Model Name Device Name Current Firmware Version Status
RouterCBR750Angelo-CBR750V4.6.14.4No New Firmware Available
SatelliteRBS750BasementV4.6.14.3No New Firmware Available
SatelliteRBS750OfficeV4.6.14.3No New Firmware Available

On the Xfinity app I can see two different speeds. In one place it shows my plan as 800Mb/s and in another it shows as 1000Mb/s. Through the speed-test in the Orbi app or browser interface I see 1157.27Mb/s download and 17.81Mb/s upload speed. I have around 60 devices connected on my network, most of which are smart home devices (switches, cameras, thermostat) that don't consume constant bandwidth. I have 4-5 active devices at any point in time.

Like many other users, I have to reboot my modem every 2-3 days after the speed slows right down. Xfinity has replaced all the cables in my home but my modem never shows as online on their app. They have re-provisioned the modem multiple times without any luck.

Any help in achieving a stable connection would be highly appreciated. I'll be perfectly happy with a stable 800Mb/s rather than an unstable faster connection.

Thank in advance.

  • What speed package do you pay for? 800Mbps or 1Gb?

Power levels are good. A few odd Correctables but nothing major. Mostly zeros. Any Criticals, Errors or Warnings seen in the modems event logs has to be reviewed by the ISP and resolved by them.

    How many RBS are deployed?
What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router and 📡 satellite(s)? 30 feet or more is recommended in between RBR📡 and RBS🛰️ to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected.

What channels are you using? Auto? Try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and 40 to 48 channel on 5Ghz.
Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many?

Any of the following enabled? Armor, Smart Parental Controls or Circle, Traffic Meter. If so, disable all these.

If you haven't factory reset since the FW update, this would be the next step. A complete pull of the power adapters for a period of time after the factory reset then walk thru the setup wizard and setup from scratch with a wired PC and web browser. Recommend setting the default DHCP IP address pool range to the following after applying and a factory reset: 192.168.#.100 to 192.168.#.200.

I would power OFF the ISP modem for 1 minute. Factory reset the Orbi router and power it off. Power ON the ISP modem and let it sync. Then power ON the Orbi router and walk thru the setup wizard again using a wired PC and a web browser.
Press the back reset button for 15 seconds then release.

Might reduce the power from 100% to 50% on the RBR for wifi. For that size of home, and two RBS, you could get away with having 1 RBS but for two, i'd reduce the power.

Lets do a full on factory reset and setup from scratch. Don't enable Armor.

After the reset, give it say 10 minutes, then copy and pastes the cable connections status and event logs page for me again.

I have 2 RBS satellites. The CBR is on the ground level, one satellite is upstairs and the other is down in the basement. Home is around 3400 sq ft over 3 levels.

Just curious, how does the WiFi channel impact the WAN performance? It is currently set to auto, but I have previously set this to a manual setting trying to minimize the interference. It didn't resolve the instability on the WAN side. Naturally there are multiple WiFi networks around, but my power levels stand out substantially above neighbors. Armor is currently enabled based on the replacement of the router but it will expire in a day - I don't have an issue manually disabling it as I don't intend paying for it going forward. There's no separate ISP Modem since the CBR750 is a modem/router combo device.

I will perform the factory reset and other suggested configs over this weekend as I can't afford the downtime while working from home.

  • Ya, the CBR really should be synced at 800 and no more than 1Gb.

Connections page looks good. Minor Correctables on 1st channel but nothing to impact anything.

    Keep on them.

So I had an Xfinity technician out at my place on Sunday - he did find one unused customer cable from a neighboring property was causing distortion so he capped that off. He feels that may be the reason for the correctibles on some of the channels. For other Xfinity clients viewing this I had to go through their "Update Plan" wizard to re-configure the speed of my connection to 800Mb/s. What he told me is that I was on an older plan (I selected this plan 18 months ago when I moved into this house) so I had to "upgrade" my plan to their latest plan definition even though I was actually seeking to ensure that I was configured for 800 Mb/s and nothing higher. This ended up costing me around $10/month more for exactly the same services I had on my existing plan...

I'm travelling out of town this week, so haven't been able to confirm whether all of these changes have resulted in stability. My wife did experience an outage on Tuesday and I had to talk her through rebooting the router. I can't tell right now if it was the same issue or something different as I can't see the logs. I will keep monitoring for the next week or so, as the speed slowdown and the need to reboot usually presents itself between every two or three days.

The Xfinity technician did share that they recently introduced what he called mid-split on the network to improve the speed upstream speeds. My modem only syncs to 4 upstream channels. He said he would follow up internally about the status between Xfinity and Netgear to ensure that they have a valid boot file supporting these additional channels on the network. This is an interim step towards DOCSIS 4 roll-out, which be able to provide symmetrical download and upload speeds via cable, similar to fiber.

Thanks for the update and details. Good to know the tech is on it.

Ya seems be changes happening at the ISP and with NG. Hopefully the tech was able to fix the issue.

Let us know how it turns out when you get back.

        Have a great weekend.
