CBR 750 modem / router connection issues with ISP

Upgraded from R7000 Nighthawk to Orbi 750 CBR AX 4200 Modem Router Combo 

 

worked really well for first 6 months or so until the ISP did an upgrade in my area moving my speed tier to 1200 MBPS. For the last 6 months I have to reset the Orbi daily sometimes 2 -3 times a day to get the connection to work. Yesterday the Orbi solid magenta led came on and would not turn off. Contacted Xfinity and was told no outage in the area. Checked wires , coaxial connections, firmware etc. Attempted many restarts of the Orbi modem / router. Technician scheduled to troubleshoot in person.  After leaving it unplugged overnight and plugging back in this morning it’s up and running again with great speeds. 

I was reviewing Xfinity’s list of compatible devices and noticed Orbi 750 CBR AX 4200 modem/router is not listed as compatible or recommended but the box of the Orbi indicates it is and the Netgear site also has it certified with Xfinity.

 

Is the CBR 750 really not recommended or compatible?

 

I’ve had a lot of connection issues with this Orbi after having next to none with the r7000 for years. 


I’ve seen alot of other posts on reviews, forums and other communities having similar problems with this specific Orbi product.

 

Is anyone aware if Netgear is making any changes to address this?

    It is compatible with CC/XF, just not with there 1.2Gb speed tier services. You'll need to downgrade to 800Mpbs. 

    The ISP changed there speed tiers last year which 1Gb was there max speed plan, which the CBR750 supports. When they split this into 800 and 1.2Gb plans and bumped everyone up to the 1.2Gb plan, this caused problems for the CBR750 which both ISP and NG is aware off. 

     

    Technically the modem side can handle the 1.2Gb speed, it's the router and LAN ports on the CBR that won't ever see anything past 1000Mpbs since the LAN ports on the back of the CBR are 1G max only. Which is why 1Gb was working until the ISP made the change. 

     

    What Firmware version is currently loaded?

     

    We've gone round and round with other users about this. Only thing that seems to make the CBR work is the 800Mpbs speed tier since the ISP doesn't put out the 1Gb any more

      Thanks for the information. The firmware I'm running is V4.6.14.4_2.3.12

       

      I just checked on downgrading my service to the 800mbps which seems like going backwards for such a touted high end product as Orbi "The Rolls Royce" of wifi. 

       

      Apparently, Xfinity wants to charge more for the 800mbps service ($20.00 more per month) than they do for the 1.2GB service. So it will cost even more monthly. Fells like NetGear needs to make this right somehow. A $600 product that claims to be GB compatible 3.1 docsis future proof suddenly becomes a giant paper weight so soon after purchase. 

       

      I've been a Netgear fan for years, but this is leaving a pretty bad taste for such an expensive product. 

       

      Not sure downgrading service is the right move here. 

       

      Purchasing a router / modem combo in this case really backfired. First time and last time for that especially since the combo in this case cannot be used as a router with another modem.

        All this is between NG and the ISP. Nothing else we can do here about it. Once reason I personally don't recommend gateway units. ISPs can change there policy and configurations, leaving some modems and users out. Having separate units offers better flexibility for users to maintain control over there units. 

         

        NG Gateway modes have never supported using them as routers. There primary function is the modem. The only modes NG supports for Gateway modems is modem only mode and router mode. Same with other Mfrs. Some don't even support modem mode. 

         

        You can use the CBR in a faux wireless AP Mode however. Turn OFF the DHCP service on the CBR and connect it to a host router and use the wifi portion of the CBR. I've done with with mine and it works.
