I just switched from Comcast to AT&T fiber, 2 Gb using a Humax BGW-320-500

thanks for this thread.

I just switched from Comcast to AT&T fiber, 2 Gb using a Humax BGW-320-500.  I have a Netgear set up with a RBRE960 and two satellites.  since switching to AT&T I had the fun of the netgear router killing the BGW until I setup IP passthrough.

I have disabled the wi-fi radios on the BGW, I do not have a 6GHz only network enabled (I do have guest network and IoT networks active).  It is not running in AP mode,  Running a speedtest of the RBRE periodically the upload speeds crash in particular (speedtest off of the BGW is showing good numbers; e.g., off the BGW getting 2.5 up and down off the RBRE sometimes 2.3 up and down, but sometimes as low as 100Mb up, sometimes in the middle).  and internally both up and download speeds are now really laggy (including transfers between my laptop and NAS, for example.  speed tests off my phone or laptop are frequently in the single digits Mb up.

Interesting thing I have noticed is that the RBRE I have has a Mac address that ends in ":C8" both what's written on the label as well as what is in the Orbi app.  However, what the BGW is showing is ":C9". any thoughts on this?

Any suggestions of a setting that I may have missed when connecting the Mesh system to my AT&T fiber.  the internal system was running fine when it was on the comcast modem.

Thanks!!

  • What Firmware version is currently loaded?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6A STP is recommended. STP being important here.

Be sure your connecting the RBRs WAN port to the BLUE LAN port on the ISP router.

What does the WAN or Internet MAC address show on the RBRs web page under advanced tab/Internet section?

What devices are you speed testing with? Wired ethernet is preferred.

      Hi,

Firmware loaded is V6.3.7.10, I'm manually updating to V7.2.6.21 which only seemed to be available to download (and not in the auto updater).  will get some shielded cables.  not sure whether the one that came with the Orbi is or not (isn't labeled as far as I can tell).  Have it from the 10Gb port on the AT&T router to the WAN port on the Orbi.  I have moved one of the satellites further away (comcast copper came into my closet, fiber is t my garage) I have a challenging house where the nature of the walls and building material causes a lot of blockage so the distances aren't ideal.  The weird thing is that the speedtest from the RBRE in the app itself sometimes looks like the uploads (but not downloads) are throttling.  but *shrug*.  cables not available locally in store so have to wait until next week to update status.  Thanks for suggestions.

The MAC address printed on the label is for the Ethernet LAN ports. The WAN port has a MAC address that is identical except for the last digit.  By-the-way, the WiFi radios also have the  equivalent of a MAC address that is another variation on the hardware MAC address.  Thus, the 2.4G radio, the 5G radio, the 5G backhaul radio, and the 6G radio will have very similar MAC addresses.

It is a puzzle that changing Internet Service Provider (ISP) could have any impact on performance within the Orbi LAN.  It might be worth double checking that the AT&T radios are really "off".

Thanks, makes sense re: Mac addresses.  the router got relocated in the house, but the upload situation seems really random and sometimes occurs at the router itself.  will try shielded cables and see if that plus moving one of the satelites resolves the situation.

and apologies as I forgot to answer the question about the AT&T router.  The network doesn't show up when I look for networks on my laptop or phone and the settings indicate off.  Because the router only has a single indicator light on the unit, can't verify that way.  But I assume really off.
