Initial Set-up Questions

I just reset my RBR850 router and am now re-setting everything. But like the first time I did this I see all the options to choose from and not the knowledge to pick.

For example, under the Basic tab and Internet Setup sub-tab I'm presented with the following screen. Without being a networking guru, how do I make the correct selections? The same question applies to the other setup sub-tabs. Another example, what type of security should I use for my Guest network?

Is there a manual to help.  Thanks.

    Hello Dbsoccer ,

    Welcome to the NETGEAR Community!

I understand that you would like more information on the best network configuration for your RBR850. Users found that it is better to use Google DNS than the ISP. Simply tap "Use these DNS Servers" and input 8.8.8.8 as primary and 8.8.4.4 as secondary.

For security purposes it is best practice to use WPA3 encryption. However, this may cause some compatibility issues with some devices. I recommend to use WPA3 encryption unless there are issues with compatibility with attached devices.

Please see attached the user manual for the RBR850 for further assistance:

  • Hello Kevin,  I've been working through the users manual and just came back to your initial comments. So on the  Internet Setup page under the Basic tab, instead of clicking the "Get Automatically from the ISP" radio button under Domain Name Server (DNS) Address do as you instructed above and use Google DNS?

I am also wondering about what can be assigned and what is automatically assigned and can't be changed. For example, I've learned I have a IoT device (WIFI photo frame) that prefers 2.4GHz. Can I assign this device to this  IoT network that was seemingly created automatically when I created my Primary Network.

Also, I have two Satellites. The router and the Satellites are on different floors/basement of the house. It seems logical that the devices that near a particular Satellite would be connected to that Satellite.  Can I assign a device to a specific Satellite or the router?

      Hello Dbsoccer

      Thank you for your reply!

The IoT network can be configured to work solely on the 2.4Ghz band by navigating to "admin">"Wireless"> then select 2.4GHz under the IoT network settings. Unfortunately, device assignments is not an available feature of the Orbi Mesh systems at this time.

      Best,
