Microsoft Authenticator times out
Hi all.
I have a new fibre connection with an Orbi RBR350 - Router Firmware Version: V4.20.0.4_3.100.71
I use the Microsoft Authenticator app on my Android devices for MFA.
When on WiFi through the Orbi, the MFA approval request comes in, I approve it and the app spins and spins and the device requesting the approval just times out.
If I turn WiFi off and go onto 4G/cellular, it works fine.
Is there a weird MTU setting or something else that could be causing this? I've tried looking on the Orbi's 'advanced' settings page but can't find anything.
Any ideas?
Cheers
Hunt
- Ugh - I have discovered that my ISP has a "Port Filtering" setting that is enabled by default. - "We network block inbound traffic (TCP/UDP) associated with the following ports." - Port - Inbound traffic - 0 - 20 - FTP data - 21 - FTP data - 22 - SSH (Secure Shell), File transfers - 23 - Telnet - 25 - SMTP (email sending) - 53 - DNS server - 67 - Bootstrap server, DHCP - 68 - Bootstrap client, DHCP - 80 - HTTP server - 110 - POP3 server - 135 - remote manage DHCP, DNS server - 137 - NetBIOS name service - 138 - NetBIOS Datagram - 139 - NetBIOS Session - 143 - IMAP server - 161 - SNMP - 162 - SNMP - 443 - HTTPS server - 547 - DHCPv6 server - 593 - HTTP RPC remote procedure - 2049 - NFS - With this disabled - I can finally use my authenticator app. - Grrrr so frustrating as the ISP never mentioned this!!

- CrimpOnGuru - Experienced UserCould you please double check the firmware number. It appears that the most recent firmware version is v4.4.1.29, released 8/9/2022. (The usual questions) - Everything else works normally when the Android device is connected to the Orbi WiFi?
- The Android device works normally, including Microsoft Authenticator, when connected to other WiFi systems?
- Are Bitdefender Armor or Smart Parental Controls enabled on this router?
 - redbeard007AspirantThanks for the reply.
The Firmware Checker on the Orbi says it's up to date.
There are 2 options on the Netgear site:The first option gives me the file: RBR350_signed-4.4.1.29
And when I try and update the firmware with that I get this error:The other RBR350 option which is possibly the correct one given I am in New Zealand and it has NZ in the name? Gives me file: RBR350-signed-V4.20.0.4
Which when I try and upload that, it says it's the same as the current version:Current Version 4.20.0.4_3.100.71 Uploaded Version 4.20.0.4_3.100.71
Yes everything else works on the WiFi network and on the android devices (I have 2 and they both present the same symptoms).Authenticator on both devices works fine on other WiFi networks I don't see where to find bitdefender or smart parental controls on the settings pages.... Cheers Hunt - CrimpOnGuru - Experienced UserWas this Orbie system provided by the ISP, or did you purchase it?
