  • Failed part of the way through, and now I'm unable to use one of my satellites.  I started the process with one of my RBS750 satellites, and for some reason, the update didn't take.  The system is unable to see this satellite, and when I've tried to factory reset the satellite, the factory reset doesn't take either -- the satellite just boots up and acts like it's connecting normally to my RBK750, but the system doesn't "see" the satellite, even with multiple reboots of both RBS750 and RBK750.  That said, my network can still *access* the satellite (since I have a Synology NAS attached to it that I use for Time Machine backups, and backups have been occurring normally and I can access files on the NAS through my Mac), but Orbi thinks it doesn't exist.

I don't want to factory reset the RBK750 and the other RBS750 because I don't want to lose access to the rest of the network given that the factory reset isn't working on my initial satellite.

Can you connect the RBS with a ethernet cable to the back to the RBR and log into the RBSs web page and send it's FW file on the RBS web page with a wired PC and web browser?

What's the RBS web page URL?  Is it just orbilogin.net, or is that only for the router?

  • For anyone who was on v3 (like I was) and enjoying stability, if you're thinking that this version resolves any of the instability problems between satellites, it doesn't, at least not for me.

This is the same buggy v4 firmware, except the WiFi drops more often, they've only stopped the lights from coming on so you don't notice the issue as much. I upgraded and downgraded back to the old version within 2 days. Unstable trash firmware.

I reverted back to V3.2.16.22_1.4.9, and my network is stable again. If you need help downgrading, let me know. Happy to help anyone!

I have heard of a lot of buggy installations of 4.6.7.13, surprisingly, I have had no issues, it definitely solved my guest network issues and that is a great help — so my kids and grandkids are not complaining that their devices aren’t working.

Perhaps some of these buggy installations are equipment related?  It does sound like Netgear really needs to get on the playing field and stop released crappy firmware updates before thoroughly testing them for reliability across all platforms and scenarios.

Yeah, what's weird is, as soon as I revert back to v3, my whole setup is perfect. Everything is stable even at factory defaults. v4.* requires so much tinkering and it's still horrible.

It can't be hardware if a particular version works perfectly, right?

  • i've been mega-stable running firmware  V4.6.7.5_2.1.7.

Uptime of more than 40 days with everything running smoothly. It's a beta version, but it's working really well for me!

  • After period of stability, random router reboots have returned. I’ve upgraded manually to this latest firmware and have had one reboot in 3 days. I’ve got router and hardwired switches on the same ups with battery backup, so I know it’s not power. Everything else works great.

  • Maybe Netgear should offer a stripped down firmware, remove the nanny and security subscription stuff. Would simplify the build and test.  NG will never get my money for those anyway, it’s bloatware.

Not a bad idea, so my Netgear Bitdefender subscription will renew in early May.  Do you think it’s not worth renewing?  Occasionally, I get alerts that my router blocked a phishing attempt, etc., and seems to make me feel secure on my network.

If we were using The Orbi system for playing games or social media, it wouldn’t be a big issue. But this essential for our job !! We both work from home. Poorly tested updates are a hindrance on our bottom line.
  • Yeah, still having issues with this FW version.  One of my satellites is showing status as "Disconnected" on my Attached Devices list, but I know it's connected to the network because our Synology NAS is attached to it; our Macs continue to successfully and wirelessly back up to the drive via Time Machine and I can access the NAS and files on it through Finder.  I've already completely rebooted the entire network (router, satellites and cable modem) with no success in getting it to reconnect in the Attached Devices list, and I'm unable to factory reset the satellite...  it just doesn't take -- every time I try, it just boots up and seemingly connects normally to the Orbi network.

Has the RBR been factory reset since you updated?

You might leave it for now. If it's working otherwise and only showing the RBRs web page as disconnected. Possible issue on the RBR web page rather then the RBS. If this isn't blocking anything, I'd leave it for now.

  • SOLVED

    Hi there,

I just tried to update from firmware v4.6.7.5 to v4.6.7.13 and started as instructed by RBS750 but when I try to do a manual update on RBS750 ---> I get

Firmware upgrade failed. Please check your file.

So now what do I do ;(

THANK you [ I don't use Auto-Update which rarely finds an update anyways].

I'm of course connected to the correct network - using WPA3-Personal if that matters.

    Cheers,

    Emmanuel.

SOLVED, I re-downloaded the file and they worked fine.

You were careful to select the RBS firmware file rather than the RBR file, correct?

Also it's recommended to use a wired LAN cable connection with a PC to the RBS or RBR when doing Manual FW updates.

  • Hi All,

I did the updates as per first post and all appears ok, the 2 satellites updated together, however when I checked all after also doing the RBR, the firmware versions on the 2 satellites are different, which seems impossible as they both updated from the same file.  Anyone else seen this?

    Thanks

I don't think my screen shot worked. My point is i updated both satellites together using manual process and one updated 4.6.7.13 and the other 4.6.7.14. Surely a strange situation? I tried again and it made no difference

To correctly manually update the one RBS, you would need to download the RBS fw file, unpack the FW.zip file. Log into the IP address given to the RBS and use the RBS web page directly to send the FW file to the RBS.
