ORBI 960 speeds 1/2 of modem speeds

Just converted old ORBI system to new 960 mesh w/ three satellites. Using app, it shows speeds from modem at +/- 950mbs. Top wifi signal (anywhere in house) is 550mbs.

Why tout monster capabilities when the actual wifi delivered is so much lower?

House is 4000 sf and satellites are evenly placed, but we're talking anywhere in house. Performance overall is great but how come I cannot get even close to that max signal speed?

  • What mobile devices are you speed testing with. Some if not most wifi devices are only 2x2 and can top out at 500-600mbos. 4x4 devices can see near 900Mpbs and over.

Please explain 2x2 vs 4x4. I am using computers (older iMac and newer MacBook Air, plus newer iPhones (Wifi 6 capable).

Theoretical vs. actual WiFi performance is a  complicated subject. Internet searches will provide links to dozens of informative articles, such as this one:

The bottom line is that those wildly inflated promises* about WiFi are just that: wildly inflated.  In actual practice, an older WiFi device that is located just a couple of feet from the access point will be lucky to achieve 400Mbps. A modern WiFi6 device will perform better, and is also affected by distance.
