Orbi RBR750 (+2 satellites) and Fidium Internet

We recently switched internet services (from XFinity to Fidium).

XFinity is DHCP and Fidium is PPPoE.

All worked great except for my wife's work laptop and it's VPN.

Orbi was connected directly to Fidium's box (not router).

It dropped 2-14x/day.

The only way to fix it was to disconnect the Orbi and bring in a Fidium router and their extenders.

Now my WiFi is less than stellar.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Can I remove the Fidium extenders and somehow use the Orbi as extenders?

Thanks in advance.

Certainly.  The Orbi router can be connected to the Fidium router with an Ethernet cable. You have two choices:

    1. Use the Orbi as a router and recognize that there are some specific applications that will not be convenient to use because that results in a "Double NAT".
    2. Put the Orbi into Access Point (AP) mode, where the Fidium router controls all "router type functions" and all the Orbi does is provide a mesh WiFi.

I have attached the Orbi to the Fidium router but cannot log in to it. I am assuming I may have to do a factory reset. Can I assume that once I am able to log in to it again that setting it as an access point is in one of the menus? Thank you for the information.

A factory reset will not be an undue burden because in Access Point mode the only items you will need to set are the WiFi SSID/password and the admin password.

Router / AP mode is on the Advanced Tab, Advanced Settings menu (at the bottom). Open that and Router / AP mode will show up.

  • Just had Fidium installed.  ONT to Orbi RBR850 with a cat 6 ethernet cable.  Plug and play, no modification of Orbi settings was necessary.  Was using a Netgear cable modem to Orbi and Spectrum before this.
