Orbi RBR850 - App & Orbilogin say FW up to date but Community says 4.6.8.5 is latest?

Evening all, Struggling log a support case with Netgear as posted earlier. Hoping someone can help with that but have managed to logon to Orbilogin.

Checked basics, and it says the FW is up to date but I read that there is a later version.

As you can see in the pic above, it says FW up to date on router & sat 1 but I read 4.6.8.5 is latest. Then  for sat 2, 3  and 4 it makes no reference.

Bit confused here. Anyone have any steer if I need update and how best to do. I have some other config issues to fix and ask on the RBR 850 but thought best get to latest FW first.

  • Netgear's firmware update situation is confusing.  From what I gather, after new firmware goes through the typical Quality Assurance process:

    • The firmware gets loaded on the support web site, where anyone who is eager to try it can download and install it manually.
    • If some time goes by and there are not serious complaints, then eventually Netgear will set up a process where the web update and app update mechanisms will announce that it is available to any customer who happens to look at them. (web or app)
    • At some point (which for my most recent RBR50 update was about six weeks), Netgear may push the update silently during the night.

There was a horrible fiasco last May when firmware was pushed to the 750 and 850 products which nuked customer's ability to access the router using either the web or the app.  HUGE backlash.  Much anger.  There are rumors that Netgear may have put the auto  update "on hold".

So, it's up to you.  If you have no issues, I would caution "no hurry".  If you definitely have issues, then no one will be very interested until the system is on the current release.

    • Many thanks for explaining that. Is helpful.

And in the broadest sense, I think everything is working well and yet some Orbi sat's display a FW version and others show blank.

Also in the Android app, all the sat's read blank were it says FW.

Equally it looks like on my devices, that the FW is several versions out of date. Have no idea why as it was bought new, is totally vanilla, no clever stuff.

    Hi moonwatcher64 ,

What 's RBR850 and RBS850 FW do you use currently ?

Sorry, the attached picture is blurred, so I can't see it.

And you also can check RBS850 FW via RBS850 web page.(you can connect to RBS850 via wired)

    Thanks.

    • Hi there, thanks for coming back.

That's the problem, the RBS850's don't show any FW version at all .... on the web page or the app. The text boxes are blank and without text.

I've managed to update the RBR850 from some age old version to 4.6.9.11.

I have downloaded the same version for the Orbi sats but it refuses to update. I believe in reality you are supposed to update the sats first.

But I think FW updates should be automatic in the main. When I have run the 'update check' in the past, the router always has reported that everything was up to date which it has not been I can see now.

        Yes.

Can you log into the RBS web page and check FW version there then update the RBS to v.11 using the RBS web page?

  • What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router and 📡 satellite(s)? 30 feet or more is recommended in between RBR and RBS📡 to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected.

I found that if the RBS are to far away from the RBR, this can effect how the FW is detected or being reported from the RBS to the RBR.

What does the FW version say if you log into the RBS web pages?
