orbi rbr850 continually repeatedly dropping internet (router solid magenta)

I have an Orbi RBR850 router with one satellite.  I use Comcast internet with a cable modem Arris tg1682g set in bridge mode and the Orbi in router mode.  I have been using this set up since getting the Orbi for over 2 years with no issues at all.  I have very little changed from default settings other than adding a raspberry pi on a static IP (both hard set on the device, and as a reservation in the Orbi setup).

Yesterday Comcast had some outages during the day for a few hours, and ever since my the Orbi router will drop the connection from the modem and go in to solid magenta ring color.  The satellite has no problem lights on.  The internet connection from the modem is fine.  Comcast shows "up" status with no outages nearby, and the Comcast connection diagnostic shows no issues for my connection.  My neighbor hasn't had a problem.

I've tried disconnecting everything- wait a few minutes, reboot the modem, wait till all lights are on, reboot the router, wait again til it is booted, and then reboot the satellite.  When the connection is first established, the orbi will have some internet access for anywhere from 2-3 minutes to ~15, then randomly drop it until I unplug something.  I can unplug anything and reconnect it, and it will work again for a few minutes before dropping.  If I leave the Orbis on, and just reboot the modem, I get connection, then a drop.  If I leave the modem on and reboot the router, same thing happens.  If I reboot all together, same thing happens.  No matter what, I only get a connection for a few minutes before Orbi router drops to solid magenta.

I can leave everything plugged in to power, and just unplug the modem connection to the router, replug it in, and I still get internet again, though when I do this the connection seems to drop again must faster than when I do a power cycle of either the modem or the router.

Orbi firmware is up to date.  I've tried resetting to factory settings.  Still the same issue.  I have no idea what else I could try to do other than changing the modem back to router mode, and changing the Orbi to AP mode, which I'd rather not do, and don't see why I'd need to if it has worked fine this whole time without issue...

Any one have any other suggestions?

  • As a follow up, it was indeed Comcast and the Orbi is back to performing just fine!  Thanks for the help.

It runs a program called BassEQ which works with a miniDSP on the local network to add bass filters to subwoofer signals for movies.  It needs a static IP to work.

Thanks.  People often use Pi's for DNS resolution (Pi-Hole) or as DHCP servers.

It seems strange that this started immediately after the Comcast outages.  Could Comcast have reset their modem as part of the outage restoration, and perhaps 'changed something'?
