Orbi RBR850 previous 2.4GHz devices not connecting at all

I recently transitioned from a Netgear Nighthawk R7000 to a Netgear Orbi RBR850.

On my Netgear Nighthawk R7000 I separated the 2.4G and 5G SSIDs. For the Netgear Orbi RBR850 I had no choice but to have them combined. Before going ahead with the upgrade I researched any issues with Mesh networks having to combine SSIDs across the 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks and was confident I could resolve them.

However, since then the various devices I have that use the 2.4GHz frequency either do not connect or connect sporadically with issues. This includes:

  • Epson Workforce inkjet printer
  • ecobee 3 thermostat
  • Wyze Cam v2
  • Wyze Cam Pan
  • Wyze Cam v3
  • iRobot Roomba 850
  • LG Washer
  • LG Dryer

Here’s how I attempt to connect any of the cameras I have:

  1. Open the router settings on http://192.168.1.1/
  2. Select Advanced | Setup | Wireless Setup
  3. Deselect “Enable 5G” from the settings and click apply
  4. Confirm the router has rebooted
  5. Power up each camera in turn and connect it to the network
  6. Enable 5G on the router and restart

This should be faultless, but each camera is flaky and inconsistent - and several of the cameras are reporting as offline, for no discernible reason. There are similar issues with the other devices, with the printer being the most frustrating - it can see the network but refuses to connect.

Orbi Firmware Version: V4.6.3.16_2.0.51

  • Would you take a screen capture if your wireless settings page under Advanced tab/Advanced settings please?

Disable 5G SSID broadcast has never been supported on Orbi AX systems.

Let me know if there is anything else you may need.

There are two things you could try and I would recommend to try each one seperately so you can understand if one or the other makes a difference.

First select a fixed channel for the 2.4Ghz band of 1, 6 or 11 depending on what other routers near you use, pick the least crouded.

I have devices that behave badly when the channel is set to auto so you might too.

Second disable AX support on the 2.4Ghz band.

Usually people that can take advantage of AX mode (ie. WiFi 6) will be using the 5Ghz band so disabling it for the 2.4Ghz band is not a real problem.
