Power supply issue with RBR850

I purchased my RBR850 + Satellite system back in June 2020.  A few days back the system went offline without any warning. On investigation, I realised the power to the unit was the reason. I disconnected the power cable for varying times without any success. I pressed the factory reset button and that had no impact. The power light stays Amber and the status lights in the front do not light up at all.  I am guessing the power supply is at fault. There have been no changes to the house electrics nor any new devices plugged in. What are my options here? Anyone else experience the same?  Because I work from home, I had to invest in the new RBRE960 so not to interrupt my work.  Also, the older RBS850 Satellite ARE compatible with the new router. I was misled by a post on this forum and ended up buying an extra satellite when I could have used the older one.

  • Try the power supply form a RBS to see if the RBR changes behavior.

Try getting another power supply on Amazon. Just make sure it has the same voltage and amp values seen on the original power supply sticker.

  • It is not clear (to me) exactly what the point of the post is.  There is indeed a sense of urgency when working from home is involved. Using the power supply from the satellite would have enabled the router itself to remain in operation while a replacement power supply was obtained, perhaps from Amazon. Purchasing an entire 960 system "solved the problem".

Netgear's definition of compatible is not entirely helpful.  According to Netgear, the RBS850 satellite is not compatible with the RBR960 router.

Just personally, I would have preferred that Netgear indicate with a footnote the reason for their conclusion.  My guess (and it's only a guess) is that the 960 system supports WiFi6E devices and the RBS850 does not.  Thus it does not provide the same capabilities in much the same way that the RBS40V and RBS50Y cannot function as "true satellites" on the AX models.

It might be worth investing $20 in a replacement power supply so that the old 850 system can be sold, given away, or kept as backup in case something happens to the 960.  (Or, perhaps return the 960?)

Have tried power supplies from the satellite as well with no joy.  The power led on the Router remains amber and the unit does not attempt to bootup. Indicated by the absence of any lights to the front. I think the issue is the power supply on the board itself. I'm not an expert but it seems the issue is not a trivial one.  Am surprised that it only lasted 3 years.

Thanks for the explanation. I missed the part where the satellite power supply was also ineffectual.

Also surprised about the failure.  My RBR50 is still going strong after 6 1/2 years.
