Random ghost satellite driving me mad.

I recently upgraded my home internet to 2GB. After doing so, I purchased Netgear multi-gig unmanaged switches for the house. In order to take advantage of the higher speed, I direct connected one of the satellites to a new switch using the 2.5GB port. So the sat is on a wired 2.5GB switch, connected over local network to another 2.5GB switch on the other end of the house, that is connected to a 2.5GB port on the Orbi router, that itself is connected to the 2GB Moca modem.

After rebooting the sat, and rebooting the Orbi router, that satellite shows as two. One wired, and one wireless that shows to be out of sync. I cannot remove the ghost wireless sat, and nothing connects to it. It cannot be ping'd and the MAC address does not match what is printed on the sat.

If i take it off the wire, the ghost goes away and the sat shows normally as wireless. It is worth noting that everything "seems" to be working ok, but I have that random sat showing up in both the app and in the browser.

My home is wired (confirmed myself) for Cat6. All of the switches are Netgear branded and 2.5GB.

I even went as far as to pick up two new switches this weekend because someone on another old thread said the switch might be the issue. I picked up two TP Link multi-gig switches and the issue persists after multiple reboots of both the sat and the router.

Everything is running the most current FW.

I won't even begin to complain about how I have to have 3 satellites to actually get coverage for my home that is only 3500 SQF. New home with really good insulation, so signals do not get very far. But I digress.

  • Got a screen capture of this?

Is this the Orbi 960 series you have tagged?

What is the model #'s of these switches you have in use?

Did you first synce the RBS to the RBR before ethernet connecting them?

If you bring the RBS near or in same room as the RBR and ethernet connect them there, does this ghost satellite appear still?

3500 sq feet the RBR and just one RBS should work however depending on building materials, two maybe needed with lowering the power on the RBR to say 50% and check.

What Firmware version is currently loaded?

Got a screen capture of this? Yes. Notice the ghost has no hardware version, no firmware version, and no serial number.

      - This is one router, and three satellites. (RBRE960 + (3) RBSE960's)

What is the model #'s of these switches you have in use?

      - NETGEAR 5-Port Multi-Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged Network Switch (MS105) - with 5 x 1G/2.5G

Did you first synce the RBS to the RBR before ethernet connecting them?

      - Yes, it was synced showing "GOOD" before it was wired in.

      - YES. Note the ghost sat ONLY appears when it is connected to 2.5GB switch. I have a second sat wired in on a 1GB switch and this issue is not present on that one. Only on the 2.5GB switch.

      - I have not adjusted the power settings, so they will be at default. I am not sure I understand your point, so i will have to look into it. My home is beyond insulated and I have had wireless signal issues through three different WiFi networks since we moved in.

What Firmware version is currently loaded?

      - V6.3.7.10 on everything.

  • Very odd.  How are the other two satellites connected?

Does a speed test verify that the connection between router and satellite is greater than 1GB?

One satellite is wireless, one is connected to a 1GB switch (no ghost, working perfectly), and the third satellite is connected to a 2.5GB switch (this one has the ghost sat associated with it)
