RBR750 and Fiber - Won't get full connection

Hi All,

As a last straw - I really don't want to pay hundreds for a new Mesh system - I was reaching out here - apparently Netgear now charges for a year at a time of support (guess that started in 2021, pft) -

At any rate - I have an issue with my Fiber Internet Service - if I use their terrible equipment - I can get my full service speeds - 1gig up and 1 gig down. If I hardwire test the Orbi - there's something with the QOS settings not playing nice - multiple hardwire/wifi tests and advise my speeds are being hindered by the system - and it shows when we game, when I am on a work video call etc.

Over WIFI (which just about all my home and devices are because I can't afford to backhaul everything to hardwire ethernet at the moment) - My downloads are in the 300s and 400s and my uploads are in the 20s.

Hardwired - my downloads go to the 500s and 600s, my upload goes to the 160s.

I don't have any way to manage QOS Settings -

When I hardwired directly to my ONT - I was able to turn off QOS, and get full up and download speeds plugged in directly.

I completely reset the ORBI RBR750 system, did a brand new fresh set up - and it worked excellent for a few days - and then I don't know what the ORBI changed, but now everything is bottle necked back down.

What am I missing here? Why would this router system be dumbing down the speeds?

What Firmware version is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6 is recommended.

QoS is all automatic on the Orbi systems. Nothing to adjust here.

Try disabling the following and see:
Armor, Smart Parental Controls or Circle, IPv6, Traffic Meter.

If you have a different router that handles the ONT connection, try putting the Orbi RBR in to AP mode and see if speeds are still the same.  Static IP Address Configuration for AP Mode | NETGEAR Communities

Or maybe try a non managed 1Gb or Multi Gig LAN switch in between the ONT and RBR with nothing else connected to the switch to see if this changes the behavior.

There maybe some interopererability issue between the ONT and the RBR. Seen others post about ONTs and odd behaviors with Orbi systems. I know my 750 series handles 1Gb on the down however my ISP only supports 50Mpbs on the UP so never seen anything past that here.

  • Firmware is V6.3.8.5_1.4.80

    It's an Adtran SDX632v

None of the options requested to disable are enabled at all.

No other routers - so not in AP mode.

Some additional background - initially testing to the ONT Directly, my computer would not full download, but still cap upload at 160/170 - I went into the ethernet settings directly and disabled QOS on the computer network card itself, and that fixed my issues. However I just tested another ONT direct connection with that same computer - and now it's reflecting similar to the ORBI -

I'm not sure if this is an ORBI issue as much as it is an ONT issue -

I have tried a couple of unmanaged switches between the ONT and the Router - and even ONT and computer directly.

Could ONTs have odd behavior in general with aftermarket routers? That doesn't make sense - I spoke with their top engineers and they had absolutely no idea what else to do - they rebuilt everything on their side, checked the NOC HUB, everything -

    Awfully interesting.

v6 FW was not a valid number for a RBR750 series. You sure you have 750 series? v6 was valid for the RBR760 series I believe: https://www.netgear.com/support/product/rbr760/#download

Ya seen posts with Adtran ONTs and Orbi systems historically having odd problems. Something to try would be a non managed 1Gb or MultiGb switch in between the ONT and RBR and see if this changes anything. Some interoperability issue with some ONTs.

It is indeed an RBR750P - satellite is RBS750P

Let me toss the switch on real quick and check the wifi - working remotely so can't be down much - already been down a bunch trying to trouble shoot this again lol.

  • I had Metronet Fiber installed before Kinetic (Kinetic is a better price, and I despise T-Mobile with a passion, and they bought Metronet) - on Metronet I measured full up/down no matter what (though I will advise it was terribly odd that even on wireless at the farthest corner of my house their speedtest would measure me "full speed", even over wifi  on my cell.

I will advise - it's not just the computer - as my cell phone and two other wireless devices are also where I am getting speedtest - so I could take if my computer had an issue hardwire - that's fine, but even all the wireless devices have an issue.

I did check the cable - I have tried several cables with the same result - and we have used those cables to indeed measure speed from the ISP provided equipment as well and they worked just fine from there.

I'm starting to think Kinetic is pushing the rental of their equipment here.
