RBR750/RBR750S, how to best proceed

Hello! We bought the wifi mesh system a few years ago that included an RBR750 Router and 1 additional satellite. We had someone help us install it when we moved into the home that we rent and asked for it to be setup so that the Orbi would be our router and that the satellite would just connect if people moved too far from downstairs. A few weeks ago, we started having issues with our internet constantly going out of service and Comcast would say their system is fine. From my understanding, it looks like it was not configured properly on the initial setup. I've tried messing with it but have run into issues to say the least.

Not home currently to provide more specifics about firmware/OS but I'll do my best for now. Comcast Gateway -->Orbi Router (downstairs). Orbi Satellite upstairs (directly above the router) with a wired connection to my office computer. When I tried to enable bridge mode on the gateway per instructions I found online, it took all of our stuff offline and I had to full factory reset the Comcast gateway to get things somewhat back to normal. My initial issue of our internet going out and the Orbi's going magenta still remains.

I guess I'm just looking on best practice to move forward with getting our desired result. That would be the Orbi being our router and people being able to walk away from that and maintain a strong connection inside the home. Should I factory reset all the devices and try from scratch? Or just the Orbis maybe? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!

Has a power off for 1 minute then back ON with the ISP modem in bridge mode and router and satellites been performed?
Be sure to restart your network in this sequence:
    Turn off and unplug modem.
    Turn off router and computers.
Plug in and turn on modem. Wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
Turn on the router and wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
Turn on computers and rest of network.

What Firmware version is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6 is recommended.

Your ISP Modem already has a built in router and wifi. This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT

    Couple of options,
    1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
    2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.
    3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the Orbi router to the modem, configure AP mode on the Orbi router.

    Try option #2 first...

When I did initially set the Gateway to bridge mode and our wifi/internet went out. I did try to turn off the gateway, the router and the satellite by unplugging each of them from the outlets. I let them sit unplugged for a few minutes before plugging them back in. Afterwards, the Orbi router just stayed magenta and I couldn't access the page to turn bridge mode off of the Gateway which prompted me to reset the Comcast gateway.

I will get back to you later for the manufacturer and model number of our Xfinity modem when I get home. I will try to follow instructions for your 2nd solution either tonight or tomorrow night. Thank you!

  • FWIW, we have Comcast/Xfinity but we use our own modem so we are not dependent on Comcast's gateway so there is not extra fee to use their equipment. The modem is a Motorola DOCSIS 3.1 connected directly to the RBR750 so there is no IP Passthrough or Bridge Mode needed to be configured.  The modem is approved by Xfininty for use with their system. The only downside is that support for the modem, if needed, is not offered by Comcast. They will periodically update the modem to work with their system but that's all. We have two, hardwired RBS 750's  upstairs at opposite ends of the house (the router is downstairs) and they work just fine, even with the current update from Netgear. Outside coverage is fine as well.
