Rbr850 does not recover from internet drop

I'm still on fibre to the node so I use a modem in bridge mode with an Ethernet cable direct to the orbi router. Essentially the orbi authenticates the connection but the modem translates.

Every so often the orbi drops the internet even though the modem shows a solid connection. The unit flashes white for a while then goes a solid purple requiring a reboot to restore the connection. Note that the modem does not need a reboot but I have found that rebooting both means the service stays up longer than if I just boot the orbi.

Firmware is right up to date and it's done this since new. I've ended up building a watchdog that boots the orbi after 5 minutes of no internet but really should this be necessary?

  • Typo.  Modem in router mode means orbi won't work in mesh mode. As to new firmware it's done this since new. I suspect there's some kind of incompatibility between the bridged modem and the orbi. I've even gone static IP with the ISP and no change. Getting proper fibre in June which will eliminate the modem and I suspect will fix the issue

Orbi will working in router Mesh mode if you try it. Just use the ISP router's DMZ for the RBR in router mode.

Disable ALL wifi radios on the ISP router.

  • Ok works on PC only

    Firmware

    v7.2.6.31

Modem is a tg799 technicolor in bridge mode

Cable is the one that came with the orbi

    IPv6 is disabled

    ISP is Aussie broadband dhcp

Can't put the modem in router mode as the virbib won't work in mesh mode

What Firmware version is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6A STP is recommended.

    IPv6 enabled on the RBR?

What Which ISP are you with?

What WAN side protocol does the ISP use? DHCP? PPPoE?

Does this happen if you leave the ISP Modem/ONT in router mode?
