RBR850 Ethernet ports stop working

Hi Community,

I'm having some weird issues with my ORBI RBR850, FW v3.2.16.22, and the ethernet ports.

I'm connecting with a home built PC using an ASUS ROG Strix Z490-A-Gaming motherboard (latest BIOS and drivers) using cat5e or cat6a cables (tried both).

The problem I have is that after a some time have passed, maybe a couple of months or so, I lose the ethernet connection as displayed by the globe icon at the Windows login screen.

At first I could disable and re-enable the ethernet card in Windows on the PC and that worked, but after a few times that stopped. Changing cables did not nothing, but when I moved the cable from port #1 on the RBR850 to #2 it started working again.

And so it has for some time, several months, but yesterday the same thing happened again - nothing I did (reboots, cable swapping etc) made any difference - tried port #1 again and it dit not work, and when I moved the ethernet cable to port #4, it started working again (port 3 has been used by a laptop without any issues for the same period of time I've changed between ports 1,2 & 4).

Has anyone experienced this? Is there a way to reset the ethernet ports on the RBR850 as I'm now on the last port (don't wanna steal #3 as my wife would kill me if it would stop working for her :) )?

Thanks in advance!

  • You may want to troubleshoot by seeing if you have another ethernet equipped device to plug into that port and see if the issue is in your NIC and not the Orbi.  Just because a PC says it is disconnected, doesnt necessarily mean it is the router.

It is also possible that your NIC card is destroying the ports -- perhaps by stray voltage.

      Hi Chuck_M,

Thanks for the reply and tip! I'll check later today and see if it works with another device - I really hope it isn't the NIC destroying ports by any means as you suggest, but I'll soon find out!

  • I am having the exact same issue. After a period of a couple months a port will stop working. I move the cable to the next port and will get service for a about month or so. I have contacted customer service and the solution always leads to a factory reset. They seems to effectively reset all the ports but the problem continues to have after a few months.

What Firmware version is currently loaded?
