RBS850 poor wifi performance when connected to ethernet backhaul connection to RBR850

Hi,

I'm trying to find some additional help.
I got an ISP box which has a poor and old Wifi function in my house (ground floor and basement).
So I decided to buy new mesh system but it didn't work well because of the bad signal. So I returned back the mesh system. I found then the Orbi RBK852 mesh system with the backhaul function which should fix my problem.
Now, i have the following connectivity map:
- ISP modem which also act as router --> ethernet connectivity to RBR850 --> ethernet connectivity to RBS850

I have through my ISP a 100/20 Mbps (down/up load) performance. When I run the test on the RBR850, i got similar performance.

I configured originally the RBS850 in close range of the RBR850 and then move it to the basement. But when I run performance test, i got about 1-10/0.1-3 and rarely up to 20/5 Mbps. When I connect through the Ethernet the RBS850 with RBR850. I don't get better performance through the wifi on my Macbook Air. But interestingly, when I connect my Macbook Air through the Ethernet on my RBS850, i got about 95/18 Mbps of performance.

On the principle I would expect that by connecting the satellite through Ethernet to the router RBR850, I should be able to get similar performance

I have open ticket to the helpdesk to try to help troubleshoot. They advised to :
a) ensure I got the latest firmware and also manually upload the latest firmware
b) set a specific channel for 2.5Ghz for wifi as well as for 5Ghz
c) change wireless CTS/RTS setting
d) change MTU size to 1492
e) change DNS to Google DNS

I made on the phone several of speed test on the Satellite and on the Router through wifi and through Ethernet connection.

Unfortunately nothing helped. And I'm still waiting for some news from the support team.

Also I did completely reset the RBR850 and RBS850 devices to reconfigure completely fresh.
Unfortunately nothing worked.

Any help or advise would be more than welcome as I'm out of solution and my several hundreds of euro investment hasn't brought any benefit as I'm now working with the wired connection daily for home office and have limited/no wifi access in my basement area.

Regards

  • What Firmware version is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?

How is the RBS connected to the RBR, directly or is there a LAN switch in between?

What CAT# lan cabling are you using between the RBR and RBS? CAT6 is recommened.

You don't need to change these as they don't effect anything on the LAN side:

    b) set a specific channel for 2.5Ghz for wifi as well as for 5Ghz
    c) change wireless CTS/RTS setting
    d) change MTU size to 1492
    e) change DNS to Google DNS

  • I use to have problems with wired ethernet backhaul between RBR850 and RBS850. Not anymore.

While following the widely recommended steps to first wirelessly sync then plugging the cable in, it would eventually want to switch back to the wireless backhaul.

My subconscious thinking was that wired should always prevail over wireless when it comes to performance.

Only after questioning this that I found the root cause of the problem.

While I assumed that there was a continuous Cat6/GigE connection between the units, this turned out to be FALSE.

The easy way to know is go to the RBR850s  ADVANCED settings tab. Click the "Show Statistics" on the INTERNET PORT module.

And for the LAN port where your satellie is connected, the status should be "1000M/Full".

Anything else (such as 100M/Full) will trigger the system to go back to wireless bachaul (which in the 5GHz band, can support bandwiths in the Gbps range due to much larger frequency channels than in 2.4GHz).

I suspect a lot of people who report similar issues, will find they wholly assume the cable or whatever is in between, provides support for 1Gbps Full Duplex but don't actually check the system/interface for proof.

The culprit in my case, was a non-certified Cat6 patch cable between a Gig switch and patch panel.

Glad you found the culprit. Usually is a cable or Switch that causes problems. Mines in router mode currently and both my RBS are ethernet connected using switches. Not problems.

Yes, it's best to wirelessy sync the RBS first, then ethernet connect them.
