Re: Latest firmware for RBR860

I subscribed to a new ISP back in Nov to get an RBR860 upgrade. It came with a non public firmware version way higher than currently listed one. As I had to buy my own satellites and these updated to 7.2.6.31, I decided to “downgrade” the RBR to the same to keep things consistent. I couldn’t register the RBR under my own warranty though. Netgear would not allow me to, saying it was owned by the ISP. I’d love to know what is special about their firmware.

This week I noticed 7.2.7.15 was available for manual update only. I updated my devices without any issues and rebooted but then started to get issues a few days later with anything hard wired. Wifi was fine. Running the speed tests from a Mac direct on the router’s Ethernet port, the speed quickly dropped off from 900mbps to near zero. Rebooting fixed for a few mins. So I reverted back to 7.2.6.31 and all is fine on Ethernet - my LG is streaming fine now 🙂 my Mac gives 8-900 up and down - ISP is a Hyper fibre plan. Odd how wifi was fine. Will keep an eye open for others reporting issues with 7.2.7.15.

  • Last week I updated my RBR860 and two RBS860 from 7.2.6.31 to 7.2.7.15 without any issues and without factory resetting first and setting up as new (I'm am adverse to that drastic step). I did the satellites first then the router - must have been the first ever smooth upgrade that reached stability within a few mins - a Netgear first for me after many years! Was running 7.2.6.31 since I upgraded ISPs back in Oct/Nov 2024 and got the RBR860. The only issues I have had on 7.2.6.31 is the Orbi app failing to connect after a few months and the web UI running slow, requiring a router reboot to fix.

7.2.7.15 as rock solid for a few days, then I started to get issues a few days later with anything hard wired to the RBR860. Wifi was perfectly fine from any node. First noticed issues on the wired LG TV where no streaming apps (Netflix, Apple, Live TV etc) would start or stream and time out. Meanwhile my Apple TV on wifi and connected to TV via HDMI was fine. I initially suspected a TV firmware issue as that updated recently (within a week or so) and I spent days following that goose chase with the TV. The cabling tested OK end to end with a Fluke NetTool. In order to prove to LG Support that my network was fine given that the wifi was perfect and fast, and streaming fine to my TV from Apple TV on wifi,  I connected my MacBook to the TV's ethernet cable. Humble pie had to be ate!

Running the speed tests from a MacBook M1 direct from the router’s Ethernet port, the download speed quickly dropped off from an initial 900mbps to near zero, upload was consistently fine. Almost like a duplex/auto-negotiate issue. Rebooting fixed this for a few mins then performance quickly died off.

So I reverted back to 7.2.6.31 and all is stable on Ethernet - my LG is streaming fine now on every app 🙂 and my Mac gives 800-950mbps up and down (best I get on this M1) - ISP is a Hyper fibre 2000/2000 plan. My satellites also have wired devices, mostly Pis and IOT hard wired sensors, but these did not show any issues, but maybe they were not too bothered by the speed drop off, although I'd expect some of them to complain. Perhaps it was just router ethernet rather than satellite ethernet? I will keep an eye open for others reporting issues with 7.2.7.15. and I may try another update to see if it fails again after a few days, and look into the ethernet port settings if there's anything available in that area of the webUI.

  • What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6A STP is recommended.

Are speeds at the ISP ONT or Fiber unit good with out the RBR online.

Been historical posts that some ISPs get HW from router mfrs and put there own FW on these systems. These systems are not supported by the OEM mfrs, i.e. NG after the ISP takes over and puts there own FW on them.

What FW version was loaded on the system when you first go it?

You were able to put official NG FW on these units with ISP loaded FW?

To correctly test newer NG stock FW, you'll need to load up newer FW on the RBS first, then RBR lastly, then perform a factory reset and setup from scratch then observe for this issue if it appears again.

Possible something on the ISP provided system could be different however I don't think there should be any HW differences from ISP and NG retail. Any is possible when it comes to Orbi. 🙄

I ran v.15 on my 850 series for 30 days and saw no issues. Ran solid.

    Your ISP support IPv6 Native?

Only issue others are seeing is that IPv6 is not working on v.15 version. So they do have to revert back to prior working version. We've sent this to NG already.

The ONT is a hyper fibre Nokia 110.

I replaced all my ethernet with Cat6e.

I didn't think I could connect to and test the ONT from its 10GE/WAN port without the RBR connected. Worth giving this a try in the future when I need to eliminate my RBR from the mix.

The speed tests were fine from the RBR's webUI Speedtest (or Orbi app) and anything connected via wifi. It just didn't like LAN.

I can't recall the ISP's version but it was a very different number sequence suggesting it was a bespoke version for some local oddity. However, as the ISP also offers BYOR, had I bought a 860 then I would have had to run the public firmware. So I thought there's little risk in downgrading.

I was able to downgrade from the ISP's f/w fine. I did this as I assumed running my own sats on a way different version was asking for issues.

Rather than upgrade tom v15 and then factory reset and provision many hours of config from scratch (static IPs, VPN, device details etc), couldn't I just restore a backup after the factory reset? I've done that before and it's been fine.

IPv6 is disabled on the RBR - I vaguely recall this being one of the things the ISP advised me to change, along with removing the WAN credentials to sign-in (previous ISP had a username and password)  and adding a VLAN tag group.

Is it worth running v15 only on the sats?

  • I raised a support ticket and went through the whole upgrade process again several times with them to prove there was consistent issue with the ethernet throughout on just the RBR860 but not the RBS860s. This included a factory reset and base config that was just sufficient to get ISP connectivity on the system. LG G3 OLED TV and MacBook Pro M1 consistently poor when wired to the RBR, yet wifi connectivity is "normal", but no streaming apps work reliably on the TV when it is wired back to the RBR. As soon as I revert back to the old f/w all is fine with wired devices giving consistent throughput. Netgear accepted this as conclusive testing but have not provided a work around or confirmed the issue with the RBR860 on v15.
