Sonos and Chromecast wGTV connecting to 2.4g
Hi, I've read reams of similar problems but no solutions seem to work / fit.
I have an Orbi RBR350 V4.20.0.4_3.100.71. Currently 3 laptops, 3 phones, a cat feeder, a Sonos One Gen 2 and a Chromecast with Google TV connected.
The Chromecast and the Sonos both insist on connecting to 2.4GHz, phones and laptops are on 5GHz. This means I can't cast from phone or laptop to these media pllaers as the phone etc can't "see" them.
I have turned 2.4GHz down to 25%, doesn't appear to be an option to turn it off, and ideally I would prefer not to as the cat feeder is 2.4 only. The Ccwgtv is less than 1 metre from the Orbi, the Sonos is across the room, approx 4m in line of sight.
Any ideas how to force these two devices onto 5GHz/.
Thanks

Ya something that IoT mfrs fail to realize that 2.4 and 5Ghz are on same network but phones and pads prefer 5Ghz if detected. Something there setup SW doesn't support which is a failure on there part.
Unfortunately the 350 series doesn't have later FW and doesn't seem to support the separate IoT network has more higher model Orbi systems do.
If you tried reducing the 5Ghz power on the RBR with all RBS turned OFF and you cant get your devices to fully connect to 2.4Ghz long enough to setup the IoT device, something you can try, find you a 2.4Ghz only router, use it and configure it for same SSID name and PW as what you have on the Orbi system. Connect your phone or pad and the IoT to this router, once you have it set up on this separate router, turn it OFF. The IoT device should auto migrate and connect to the Orbi system.
Or find you a separate 2.4Ghz wireless AP that you can connect and use a separate wifi SSID name and wifi channels away from the Orbi channels and use that as a 2ndary AP.
Or get you into a more higher Orbi model that has the separate IoT network that can be configured for 2.4Ghz only needs.

Please indicate which Chromecast with Google TV this is (4K or HD)?
Both models appear to support both 2.4G and 5G Wifi:

Is the Chromecast device clearly visible to the Orbi WiFi system? (not hidden behind the television screen?)
With the Chromecast within 1 meter of the Orbi, is it possible to connect it using an Ethernet cable?

Hi, thanks for replying
- model is GZRNL Chromecast with Google TV (4K)
- Yes it’s stated spec includes 2.4 and 5GHz ac
- chromecast is behind tv, orbi is behind line of TV to one side, in line of sight, less than 1m
- chromecast has no Ethernet port

Hi thanks for replying,
this isn’t a set up issue, I’ve managed that much as Chromecast can be done via tv/remote; and Sonos via Bluetooth.
the issue is when phones/laptops are on 5 and Chromecast / Sonos are on 2.4 band, I can cast/send music or video to them, which is the a major feature point of the devices.
ideally I want all devices on 5GHz, as this is the fastest

One possibility is that this Chromecast device is defective. As mentioned above, setting up the Chromecast is done using the remote. (Smartphone app not involved.) The Orbi WiFi SSID should appear and the Chromecast should connect to the 5G signal.
Would it be possible to try this Chromecast on a different WiFi system and see if it connects at 5G?
Or, perhaps temporarily borrow a Chromecast from a friend and see if that one will connect to the Orbi at 5G?

Chromecast and Sonos have both connected to 5G on other routers (where band was selectable by SSID), Orbi is the only system I've experience with a unified SSID for both bands, hence the problem with this new Orbi system.

Thanks for the information. There have been documented situations where devices which could only connect to 2.4G WiFi were difficult to connect to Orbi systems because the smartphone app was poorly written and refused to proceed when the smartphone was connected at 5G.
That does not seem to be the issue here:
- Both the Chromecast and Sonos support both 2.4G and 5G WiFi.
- In the case of the Chromecast, although the typical setup process uses the Google Home smartphone app, it is possible to perform the setup without using the smartphone at all. The Chromecast is connected to the television with an HDMI cable and the Chromecast remote is used to perform the WiFi setup and configuration.

Notice this comment:
My Sonos One speaker is connected at 5G to an older WiFi5 model Orbi (RBR50). I do not have this particular model of Chromecast. Will look in my "Box of Stuff" to find the Chromecast I bought back in 2021.
